He questions if this a marijuana grower or a hedge fund. They raised a bunch of money in the last year or so and has started investing in a bunch of small cannabis related businesses. They also have corporate bonds on their books. He wonders what they are doing. He doesn’t understand it. They don’t seem to be strategic investments. Thinks the stock is overvalued and wouldn’t want to own it.

It’s coming back, and not just Short covering, but some actual buying. New management has come in and they are cleaning the place up.

CIBC (CM-T) or Royal Bank (RY-T)? This is the perennial laggard of the big banks, because historically it has been so accident prone. Also, they don’t have the International areas like the other banks. This is very domestic, so you’re getting domestic exposure. Royal always has a higher premium. You have to ask if you want more domestic exposure or something with a little more US flavour.

The OSC had better be right, because if it turns out they are wrong, what are they going to say to shareholders who lost so much value on the back of a news release. There were a lot of short-sellers, who were not right. What brought the company down was a run on the bank caused by regulatory scrutiny that arose from some poor disclosure on their part. The short-sellers are using their recent victory to attack other companies.

Oil prices are volatile, and any company with debt is going to be more affected by it. He doesn’t follow this closely, but assumes they have more debt than average. His personal view is that energy prices are going to come up, because at the end of the day, everything is cyclical. Thinks Saudi Arabia will do everything they can to firm up on prices.

An extraction technology company which basically extracts compounds from food. They make the key ingredients in Aveeno cream. Has a really nice list of clients and good technology. Last quarter was a little weak, but investors didn’t understand that they are running 2 plants now, so costs were higher than normal. The real problem is that management doesn’t do a good job of telling their story. If they could scale it up, it would be a cash cow and a beautiful thing. They’ll be doing an investor update very soon, so watch for that.
