He thinks good things happen when you buy cheap stocks. On the other hand, buying the S&P500 is a flawed thesis. He excludes the deep cyclical stocks like autos and airlines. There are too many players. He doesn’t want to own companies where there are that many operators.
They have a challenge in making a change to how cars are powered. They are now going into the solar business which is always a money losing business.

He likes chip companies because there is always a need for chips. There were a lot of violations of their patents in China and they are now going after those companies and should do better at getting their revenues.

Make most of their money shipping coal. With Nat gas going down it is not doing well.

Much of what they do is transaction based. A non-interest rate sensitive stock. You can make 7-8% over time on your money.

He likes the media stocks. He owns some but keep in mind that ESPN is by far the biggest earner and their revenues have been going down. If they can build the rest of their business, then it is okay. Wait and see or go to Time-Warner or Viacom, or Fox.

Utilities are challenging his company because they seem very expensive right now. SO-N are in the south eastern US and this is an area with population growth. He is scaling back.

Cruise line operators benefitted from the fall in energy and then along comes the Zika virus, but he thinks that will be solved in some way. Cruise operators have been confronted with things like this before.

Financials are cheap – 8-9% earnings yield. He likes the numbers – a little bit of growth.

He would rather not bet on what the fed would do. He is going all-in on financials. Going from 5% financial to 10% yet the market is 15% financials.

MCK-N vs. ABC-N. He likes them both, but prefers Cardinal Health (CAH-N). Those running for election are talking limits of drug prices. He likes all but CAH-N is the best.

It is leading since about last Feb. Before that it is quite beat up. They are in pension plan provision as well as being an insurer. Nice dividend yield and 8% earnings yield.

Spectra Energy Partners (SEP-N) or Spectra Energy (SE-N)? He likes both stocks. These MLP structures are quite complicated. There is generally the General Partner and a Limited Partner. In SEP they are separate, and has SE as a general partner and SEP is the Master Limited Partnership. The market prefers a company with enterprise products where they are rolled into one company, which it feels eliminates a conflict of interest. SE has outperformed SEP by quite a bit over the past year, so this is probably more of a bargain.

Market. Sometimes you have to listen to what the market is trying to tell you. Since early February, the US market has been moving up, despite 1st quarter earnings of about -6%, and the 1st quarter GDP also being pretty lousy. Thinks the market is looking forward to some earnings advance. We need earnings to grow in order for stocks to grow. For earnings to grow we need the economy to move forward. Consumers are in pretty good shape. They don’t have too much debt. Also, feels the US$ is going to go down which will help consumers outside of the US. Also, many emerging markets finance their dollar denominated debt, so when the dollar goes up, they have higher payments to make which is tough for emerging-market governments. Also, many commodities such as oil and natural gas are priced in US$s, and when the dollar goes up it makes those commodities more expensive than what they are in the US.
