Markets.  We have a booming economy, but the stock market is still in the red.  The rest of the G7 are all in the black.  We are expected to have the second strongest growth next year.  It is all a play on oil.  Italy has the weakest GDP growth.  You should not make investments based on GDP expectations.  Canadian banks are expensive, but broader opportunities are emerging.  There is some value there, but now the energy sector has come up.  We have too little of what has been good and too much of what has been bad.  GOOGL-Q is expected to cross the $100 Billion level in revenue, but it is still growing in the double digits.

NAFTA and the Auto Sector.  The integration of the auto industry between countries means it is unlikely there will be changes in the auto industry due to NAFTA negotiations.  MG-T and LNR-T have recovered nicely since the election.  Auto sales have peaked in North America so these stocks should remain range bound in this area for now.

Infrastructure companies in light of Hurricanes.  He thinks immediately of BAM.A-T.  Their business model continues to benefit from institutional asset managers wanting to own something better than fixed income.  You get to own toll facilities.  As their fees grow, the stock goes up.  It is diversified.

TOP PICK
AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc. (AMC-N)

This is the turnaround pick.  It was hit very hard this year because of a weak 2nd and 3rd quarter box office.  Theaters are not dead   There were a lot less film releases this year.  There are going to be more movies released next year.  (Analysts’ target: $25.00).

DON'T BUY
Bank of America (BAC-N)

It is doing well.  Earnings are up 13% and exceeded expectations last quarter.  A lot of it is factored in to the stock price.  There are better paces to invest right now.

HOLD
BCE Inc. (BCE-T)

The dividend (4.9%) is the main reason to own it.  It is fairly valued right now.  The growth is not great.  They are not as strong in wireless.  Their fiber to the home is behind TELUS.  You cannot go wrong with any of the top three.

HOLD
Bank of Nova Scotia (BNS-T)

Canadian banks do their best in the fourth quarter.  They are all sort of off a bit so you should see some upside in the next 3-6 months.  They are doing 12% growth in Latin America.

DON'T BUY
Crescent Point Energy Corp (CPG-T)

It is unlikely it will double in the next few months, even if oil went to $60-70 or even $100.  They need a higher oil price for the stock to move.  It is a torquey play on oil.

BUY
CVS Health Corp (CVS-N)

It is down.  Earnings are expected to increase next year.  It will likely recover because it is trading at 12 times earnings.  He would be a buyer.

HOLD
Enbridge Income Fund Holdings (ENF-T)

In the beginning of the year there was an expectation that interest rates would go up in the US and not in Canada, but then Canada surprised.  Dividend stocks have been slightly underperforming the market.  The effect from the rate increases is marginal.

PAST TOP PICK
Facebook (FB-Q)

(Top Pick Sep 19/16, Up 34%)  The price per ad they got was up 24% even if the growth rate was down to 19%.  It has run up a lot and is probably due for a pull back.  It is a near term hold and long term buy.

DON'T BUY
Gilead Sciences Inc. (GILD-Q)

They made a lot of money on their HEP-C drug, but sales have come off.  They made an acquisition.  They extract T-cells and re-engineer them to hunt for and kill cancer cells.  They get FDA approval in late November.  He is concerned that there is a lot of excitement that they will repeat what they did with the HEP-C drug.  But they already specialized in HEP-C drugs when they bought that company.  They are not in cancer drugs at present.  He worries about why the company they acquired sold out at this point.

BUY
Home Depot (HD-N)

Flooding will likely cause their business to pick up.  He does not know if that is reflected in the share price.  They are shifting the merchandise in the stores to higher prices and more profitable items.  They have not increased stores.  They are offering more services to seniors and millennials who don’t want to get their hands dirty.

DON'T BUY
Manulife Financial (MFC-T)

MFC-T vs. The Banks.  If you go back over the last 10 to 15 years you will find that the worst Canadian bank has done better than the best performing lifeco.  This has been the poorest performer of the lifecos.  The outlook appears to be for this to continue.  The low interest rates are hard on them and they don’t benefit when rates go back up because then the lifecos lose value on their bond portfolio.  It is a commoditized industry also.  John Hancock is one of their better performing units and they are looking at divesting it.  The banks are a better place to be.

PAST TOP PICK
New Home Company Inc. (NWHM-N)

(Top Pick Sep 19/16, Up 2%)  They make luxury homes in Orange County, California.  Next year’s earnings are looking more promising and expected to go up 8% so it is still a buy.
