TOP PICK
SoftBank Corp (9984-JP)

A Japanese conglomerate, well known multinational Telecommunications/Internet sitting in Japan. Trading at a huge discount to its underlying holdings. Trades at around $99-$100 billion market cap, and at a 40% discount to some of the names they own. They just bought an investment in Matchbox, which is an open-source mapping technology for every single device in the world. A good way to play some of the underlying names like Ali Baba (BABA-N) and Nvidia (NVDA-Q).  Dividend yield of 0.7%. (Analysts’ price target is ¥11,750.00.)

A Comment -- General Comments From an Expert

Market. We have a lot of things to be worried about geopolitically, a lot of interesting tensions such as NAFTA trade talks. Investors are propelling this market higher. Fresh money is coming in. Credit Suisse upgraded all the FAANG stocks just when you thought they couldn’t go any higher. A report came out talking about a melt up, and he couldn’t agree more. He is positioning on a strength-basis, but does have a “best before” date, and it is somewhere that leads into January, where we have to get very cautious. Between now and Christmas he is pretty positive. You have to stick with really good quality companies. Still thinks most people are under invested. He is pretty comfortable with where he is. It really feels like this wants to go higher, for at least the next 2 months.

TOP PICK
Alimentation Couche-Tard (B) (ATD.B-T)

Metro is doing what he expected by selling some of their stake in this company, to fund their Jean Coutu (PJC.A-T) purchase. Valuation is attractive, and they are going to put a whole bunch of Tesla stations in their locations. Dividend yield of 0.6%. (Analysts’ price target is C$72.)

PAST TOP PICK
BofI Holding (BOFI-Q)

(A Top Pick Oct 6/16. Up 23%.) Also known as the Bank of the Internet. They take high interest deposits online, make niche loans and jumbo mortgages to really wealthy foreign nationals. Something that caused him some consternation is that there are a whole bunch of extraneous lawsuits and some regulatory examinations, and it is hard to say what was really going on. They got cleared on all of them.

COMMENT
Caterpillar (CAT-N)

This was basically left for dead and everybody was very negative on it. It hit a low in late January 2016, and has rebounded nicely. It was a long, long decline for the better part of 2 years, and then finally started to turn around, and it is breaking out again. This is its first break-out in 6 years. This is probably a pretty positive thing for everybody in the world, because it means very, very hard-core resources and commodities are getting moved around.

PARTIAL SELL
Cisco (CSCO-Q)

Got under-loved and underappreciated, and the P/E ratio got down sub 10 at some point. A great company and well-managed, and they have the ability to buy some of their competitors. Still not a great name for him and probably wouldn’t make it into his portfolio. If you own, consider trimming some of it back.

COMMENT
Enbridge (ENB-T)

The 4.7% yield is attractive. Reading the reports on the street, everybody was happy with their growth plans, and more specifically, comfortable with the ability to pay their dividends.

BUY
Fairfax India Holdings Corp (FIH.U-T)

Not as familiar with this as he would like to be. It is denominated in US$s. He believes in Prem Watsa and what he is doing. The India story is really attractive, and he seems to be playing this properly. At an $0.80 dollar, you are better buying this then at a $0.72 dollar.

DON'T BUY
General Electric (GE-N)

Buy or Value Trap?He is going to have to go with a Value Trap. The stock just broke below its all-time low going back to January 2015. He would rather come back and buy it at $28 after it has moved up.

COMMENT
Goldman Sachs ActiveBeta Em Mkts Equity ETF (GEM-N)

A lot of ETF’s are static in nature, and are truly passive, 30% China, 30% Russia, 20% India, etc. What is attractive about this one is that you have the bright minds in Goldman Sachs. It is an actively managed ETF. They are not just statically buying a basket, they could go to 0% China if they wanted. MER is only 20 basis points.

PAST TOP PICK
Hub International (HBG-T)

(A Top Pick Oct 6/16. Up 23%.) This bank ETF was interesting to him because it was actively managed, Cdn$ denominated and with mostly foreign exposure.

COMMENT
Kinaxis Inc (KXS-T)

Sold this in late June. The issue is that they did an earnings report in August, and everybody was disappointed and they lowered their guidance. The main culprit is the loss of a very good Asian client. It wasn’t anything the company was doing, but that the Asian client wasn’t paying their bills. They have more and more partners penetrating more and more markets and, as a result had to pay out more in commissions. It will end up shooting out a better share price. However, the negative is that expectations are extremely high. He would like to get back into this at some time.

COMMENT
Metro Inc (A) (MRU-T)

Selling their Couche-Tard shares and buying Jean Coutu (PJC.A-T). Amazon (AMZN-Q) is entering the market with their purchase of Whole Foods. A very competitive space now. Besides the issue of having price competitiveness, you also have the minimum wage situation coming.

COMMENT
Nvidia Corp (NVDA-Q)

He exited his position on a pullback this summer. Thought it couldn’t go any higher, but regrets selling it. They seem to be in the right place at the right time, and seemed to be in everything for the last 2 years. Their latest craze is there foray into autonomous driving. Have even signed a big deal with DHL in Europe in autonomous delivery trucks. Seems to be in the right place in a lot of different areas.

COMMENT
Newell Brands Inc (NWL-N)

This was a good investment recommendation for about 4 years. The initial negative was on Hurricane Harvey, because the company said that a lot of their chemicals were going to be in short supply. That, along with stop losses, got him out with a gain of about 35%-40%.
