Briefly after the opening bell Tuesday, the TSX cracked 24,000, and closed the session 0.33% higher at a record 23,972. Most Canadian sectors rallied, led by minerals, which enjoyed a boost from stimulus measures announced by China’s government to support its flagging economy. Energy also performed well while four sectors saw modest losses, such as telcos. Gold continued its record run by climbing US$34 to US$2,663. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Major movers: CNQ<\/a> 1.86%, Vale<\/a> 6.44%, Aya Gold & Silver<\/a> 9.02% and Cineplex<\/a> -3.33% after being fined for drip pricing (adding extra fees to its movie tickets).<\/p>\n\n\n\n On Wall Street, the S&P also made a new high after advancing 0.2% to 5,729 while the Dow climbed 61 points to 42,186. The Nasdaq rallied 0.47% though stopped short of making a record close. China’s stimulus also boosted some American names. Freeport McMoRan<\/a> leapt 7.95%. Elsewhere, Estee Lauder<\/a> rallied 6.09%, Nvidia<\/a> 3.79% and Visa<\/a> -5.37% after the Department of Justice slapped it with an antitrust suit. The U.S. 10-year held around 3.73%.
