In some ways Thursday was a repeat of Wednesday’s session as the S&P and Nasdaq made record highs again, driven by AI and tech. However, the TSX and Dow sank. Once more, U.S. inflation data drove much of the action as producers’ prices unexpectedly eased and weekly jobless numbers rose to a near-10-month high. The data encouraged the street to believe that the U.S. Fed will cut interest rates in the future. Meanwhile, the U.S. 10-year yield declined further to 4.264% as Bitcoin<\/a> sank 2.3% to US$66,600. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Big movers were the semis once more: Nvidia<\/a> adding another 2.92% and SMCI<\/a> leaping 12.44%. However, Warner Bros. Discovery<\/a> closed -6.66%, Paramount Global<\/a> -6.92% and Etsy<\/a> -4.95%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The TSX sank 1.2% or 263 points as all sectors fell. Energy, staples and materials suffered the steepest declines. CNQ<\/a> closed -3.44%, Suncor<\/a> -2.93%, TD<\/a> -1.57%, Manulife<\/a> -2.31% and Celestica<\/a> rallied 3.48%. Gold retreated US$21 to US$2,300 as WTI slipped modestly to US$78 a barrel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
