Markets treaded water on Wednesday until the U.S. Fed’s Jay Powell announced his latest interest rate decision: no change. This was widely expected. However, his comments immediately afterwards at the press conference were considered hawkish by many. As a result, the S&P closed -0.94%, the Nasdaq -1.53% to fall below 13,500, and the Dow -0.22% to slip below 34,400. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Conversely, the U.S. 10-year yield ticked up to 4.391% while Bitcoin<\/a> shed 0.87% to dip below $27,000. Tech was hit hard as Intel closed -4.64%, Alphabet<\/a> (class A) -2.97% and Nvidia<\/a> -2.63%. However, Western Digital<\/a> popped nearly 4% while AutoZone<\/a> advanced 4.45%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In contrast, the TSX was flat, adding five points. Nearly all sectors gained, led by staples, materials and utilities, while energy sank. Key movers were CNQ<\/a> at -1.56%, Baytex<\/a> -1.59%, Bausch Health<\/a> up 8.09% and Equinox Gold<\/a> up 4.04%.
