Tuesday extended Monday’s losses as Russia’s barbaric invasion of Ukraine raged on. The price of WTI crude oil soared over 10% to shatter $100 a barrel for the first time since 2014. Meanwhile, other asset classes sank. The S&P closed -1.55%, the Nasdaq -1.59% and the Dow -1.76%.<\/p>\n
Financials were especially hard hit as the Bank of America<\/a> sank 3.91% and American Express<\/a> tumbled 8.47%. Industrials also suffered as Boeing<\/a> fell 5% and Honeywell<\/a> lost 3.27%. Energy names, of course, rallied, including Chevron<\/a> by nearly 4% as well as defence stocks such as Lockheed Martin<\/a> climbing 5.26%. Retail continued its streak as Target<\/a> jumped nearly 10%. While gold inched up to $1,940 an ounce, Bitcoin<\/a> leapt over 5% to $44,000. Even though a rate hike is all but assured, the U.S. 10-year yield fell to 1.721%.<\/p>\n Oil’s outsized gains cushioned the TSX’s decline to -0.58%. WCS rocketed by 11.5% to approach $94 a barrel. Materials as well as energy led the Toronto market on Tuesday and topped the list of gainers, including Fortuna Silver Mines<\/a> up 9.73%, Equinox<\/a> 8.45%, Cardinal Energy<\/a> 6.64% and Yamana Gold<\/a> 5.62%. As in the U.S., Canada’s financials took a hit: Sun Life Financial<\/a> at -2.43%, Manulife<\/a> -3.23% and TD<\/a> -3.29% despite a positive earnings season for banks so far.
