Renewed fears of Russia invading Ukraine as well as ongoing concerns over rising interest rates triggered a steep sell-off Thursday. The S&P closed -2.12%, the Nasdaq -2.88% to below 13,800 and the Dow -1.78% in its worst day of 2022. Even though tech slid, the U.S. 10-year yield also fell, losing 4% to 1.961%.<\/p>\n
Wall Street gainers included Walmart<\/a> and Marathon Oil<\/a>, both up 4%, Clorox<\/a> by 3.26% and Newmont<\/a> at 5.48%. Laggards included the semis, starting with Nvidia<\/a> at -7.57% in heavy trading, Tesla<\/a> -4.88%, financials like Bank of America<\/a> at -3.38% and PayPal<\/a> -4.68%. Cryptos offered little salvation as Bitcoin<\/a> tanked 7.55% to dip under $41,000.<\/p>\n Again, things were a little calmer in Canada as the TSX shed about 1%. Materials were the only sector to enjoy serious gains. No surprise that many gainers were mining names: Barrick<\/a> up 4.68%, Yamana<\/a> 5.15%, Aginco Eagle<\/a> 7.6%. Not all miners rallied. Osisko<\/a> tanked 13.78%. Elsewhere, Shopify<\/a> continued to drop, down 10.95%, Lightspeed<\/a> lost 8.56% and Aurora Cannabis<\/a> fell 7.02%. Beyond that, Western Forest Products<\/a> rose 3.33% and Canadian Tire<\/a> climbed 2.25% in strong earnings.
