The trading week began on a positive note as markets climbed Monday into the finish. Though crude oil faded into the close, the TSX finished 0.32% to a new closing high of 21,284. Energy and materials rallied as telcos lagged, weighed by Rogers<\/a> which tanked by 5.78% due to the ongoing feud within the Rogers family, the board and the company’s executives. Shaw Communications<\/a>, which Rogers intends to buy, was dragged down by 2.44%.<\/p>\n

Big gainers included Suncor<\/a>, up 3%, Whitecap Resources<\/a> jumping 4.6% and Cominar REIT<\/a> which soared 12% after a consortium announced it was buying it. Mining names struck it rich, including Osisko<\/a> by 6.61% and Lithium Americas<\/a> by 6.48%. WTI crude slipped 0.21% but stayed above $83 per barrel, while WCS surrendered 1.6% to dip below $68.<\/p>\n

Tech led the charge on Wall Street as Facebook reported after hours to kick off a heavy earnings week. The Dow hit a new record high by climbing 0.18% to 35,741, the S&P 0.47% and the Nasdaq 0.9%. Energy, healthcare and energy led, while consumer names and financials were mixed. Moving up were BioNTech<\/a> by nearly 6%, Avis Budget Group<\/a> at 5.17%, Martin Marietta Materials<\/a> by 3.27% and Tesla<\/a> which soared 12.66% to a $1-trillion market cap and a new high. In contrast, American Express<\/a> closed -2.55%, Danaher<\/a> -2.32% and Whirlpool<\/a> -2.38% and Pinterest<\/a> -12.71% after PayPal walked away from their deal. Lastly, Bitcoin climbed past $62,800.<\/p>\n
