Despite disappointing American employment numbers on Friday, the Nasdaq rose 0.21% to 15,363 and the TSX–lifted by a 1% rise in the price of gold to $1,831 an ounce–advanced 0.13% to 20,821. Both indices made yet more record highs to end a week dotted with record closes on both sides of the border. The S&P was flat to end the week while the Dow slipped 0.21%, though both indices hovered near their own all-time highs.<\/p>\n
In Toronto, several gold names led gains, such as Barrick<\/a> by 2%, B2Gold<\/a> up 4.17% and Kinross<\/a> at 2.51%. In other commodities, Interfor<\/a> jumped 5.46%, though Suncor<\/a> retreated 1% as the prices of WCS and WTI also slipped by 1%. After the battle over Kansas City Southern raged this week, CN<\/a> closed the Friday session up 1.92%.<\/p>\n Over on Wall Street, gains and losses were unsurprisingly muted on this last trading session before the long weekend and the unofficial end of summer trading. Movers included Nvidia<\/a> up 2%, Carnival<\/a> down 4.41% to reflect continuing unease about the Delta variant, Moderna<\/a> jumping 4.79% also reacting to Covid, and Occidental Petroleum<\/a> which sank 2.48%. Bitcoin<\/a> ground over 2% higher to return to $50,000. Markets will be closed Monday for Labour Day.
