Markets continued to grind higher Thursday without a clear overriding catalyst to close at more record highs. The TSX rose 0.5% to 20,793, a new high as all the major sectors rallied, though energy in particular gushed 3.24%. It helped that WTI crude rallied over a dollar to nearly touch $70 per barrel while WCS jumped 2.68% to nearly $58.<\/p>\n
Cenovus<\/a> soared nearly 6% in heavy trading, CNQ<\/a> 4.4% and Crescent Point<\/a> 2.91%. Beyond oil, Organigram<\/a> added 4.26% in the weed space and Cameco<\/a> leapt 7.61%. In contast, Blackberry<\/a> closed -4.27% and First Quantum Minerals<\/a> -3.55%. The Canadian dollar ticked up 0.54% to bubble under $0.80 against the USD.<\/p>\n On Wall Street, the Nasdaq climbed 0.14% to a new high of 15,331 and the S&P advanced 0.28% to make its own record of 4,536. The Dow fared well, too, adding 0.37% and flirted with making a record close. All the major Dow components gained. Notable gainers included Exxon<\/a> up 2.45%, Carnival<\/a> at 2.13% and Kroger<\/a> up 3.45%. Apple<\/a> continued its run by increasing 0.75% to make another record close. However, the credit card companies lost ground as Visa<\/a> closed -2.66% and American Express<\/a> -1.61%.
