The TSX played catch-up after Victoria Day and set a record close of 19,564 by rising 0.19% on Tuesday. However, the Toronto index and the main American ones closed on weakness. The S&P and Dow finished below -0.2% while the Nasdaq dipped into the red by the closing bell. The U.S. indices were positive for most of the session. However, they did rally strongly on Monday.<\/p>\n
In Toronto, tech, industrials and staples led while energy lagged. Regional airline Chorus Aviation<\/a> soared 7.85%, Aurora Cannabis<\/a> popped 6% while tech newcomer Nuvei<\/a> jumped 5.11%. On the downside, Cargojet<\/a> closed at -3.83%, Finning International<\/a> -4.17% and Teck Resources (B)<\/a> at -3.48%. Steelmaker Algoma Central<\/a> captured the biggest headlines by merging with Legato to go public on Wall Street. Algoma shares rose 2.16%.<\/p>\n Speaking of America, energy, financials and industrials lagged on the Dow. Underperformers included Amgen<\/a> at -2.32%, Seagate<\/a> -4.74% and Nucor<\/a> -3.2%. Troubled EV-maker Lordstown Motors<\/a> crashed 7.45% after telling investors it needed more capital and it offered weaker guidance. Vimeo debuted on Nasdaq, but closed 5.65% below its opening price. On the upside, Royal Caribbean<\/a> sailed upwards by 3.65% while Norwegian Cruise Line was close behind. Meanwhile, gold edged up 1% to $19,000, WTI finished flat in a choppy session and WCS climbed 0.6%.
