Manulife Financial (MFC-T)

Has benefited from both higher equity markets and rising interest rates. He would suggest that you could enter this one but not all at once. Stagger it is little bit.

You are very well hedged in this. If equities keep rising, you are doing okay. If the tapering issue starts again and interest-rate rise, this company would be able to reinvest their fixed income, proceeds at higher rates. Feels that insurance and annuities will be a good business going forward.

BUY
Manulife Financial (MFC-T)

Their recent acquisition of Standard Life to gain a foothold in Québec wasn’t a blow out acquisition and was a little expensive. With these types of companies, you are always going to get a little volatility when markets go down. He owns a bit of this company, and is somewhat constructive on it, really relating to their insurance. If you can, factor out the equity and the fixed income components and focus on what the CEO has been talking about as core, how well they are selling insurance. They seem to be doing quite well.

COMMENT
Manulife Financial (MFC-T)

New management seems to be focusing on their core results, pretty much selling insurance, and have mandated a pretty good target going forward. In the last quarterly earnings results, he saw some of the equity and investment return come back into that core number, so they are getting a bit blending as to whether they are selling insurance or are they investment gains. Low interest rates is a very big factor in insurance companies.

COMMENT
Manulife Financial (MFC-T)

Recently sold his holdings. Compared to Sun Life (SLF-T) he thinks this is in the better space. Have had a drastically different management team since the Delasandro days, and basically made the company more conservative. On earnings calls, this is a core focus and then you have the investment side. They are pushing into Asia, which is certainly a driver. However, the bond yield side of things, over the past 4 months has definitely been an overhang. His preference would be this company over Sun Life. It is on his radar screen.

Manulife Financial (MFC-T)

Manulife (MFC-T) or Toronto Dominion (TD-T)? From an insurance point of view this is the best in class. He likes the way management has separated out the core earnings side of things. He thinks they are selling more insurance and have a strong goal and how much they want to sell. They are growing in Asia and have a US component. Both are good names.

WAIT
Manulife Financial (MFC-T)

He looked at this in 2 areas. One is investments and the other is in their core business of selling insurance. They are having a tough time on the investment side, with corporate bond spreads widening out. This will have a short-term negative affect on insurance companies. However, their actual insurance business is quite strong. Their recent acquisition and exposure in China is quite positive. With the volatility here, there could be a better time to enter the insurance business.

COMMENT
Manulife Financial (MFC-T)

In terms of life insurers, this is arguably one of the best. Under the new CEO, they have separated into 2 focuses, their core business and their investment side. With lifecos, low rates are very detrimental to them and volatility in the stock market is not good. With a company like this, they really need to focus on the core business. A good place to be and a good company.

Manulife Financial (MFC-T)

The best in class in Canada. There are always 2 components with the insurance companies, insurance and investments. A rising rate environment should be beneficial over the longer-term. Product sales are good. They are branching out into Asia. It has been well-managed.

DON'T BUY
Manulife Financial (MFC-T)

Canadian Banks or Lifecos.  You have overhead supply.  It is struggling.  Prices will have a tendency to go back to the ‘backline’ about $19.  Chances are that it goes a bit lower.  Overhead supply is those that bought higher and are tempted to sell as it goes higher.

COMMENT

Royal Bank (RY-T) or Manulife (MFC-T)? Royal definitely looks a little better. Manulife is just making a marginal new high. Insurance companies suffer from ultra low interest rates. Higher interest rates still have not materialized.

Has executed flawlessly. A long-term core holding. At 14 X earnings, it's higher than banks which are normally 12 X’s. Wouldn't buy at this time.
