Very attractive dividend. Proponents of the stock would point to its scale advantage in North America and its very strong emerging market and global businesses. He doesn’t like the stock because 18X earnings is not particularly cheap given that it’s core franchise, Coca-Cola, has really been challenged from a volume growth perspective and has actually been negative for years and years. This has been exasperated in recent years by less and less consumer appetite for diet colas.

Great global consumer products name. There are others that she likes better. This one is just focused on soft drinks and beverages and she prefers a company with more diversified products. Corn prices have come off, which will help them on their raw material side. If the US market continues to do well, this company will participate.

(A Top Pick September 13/12. Up 1.7%.) Some of the defensive stocks have come off in the last several months. Still likes this as a defensive holding. Trading at 17X earnings and the growth is probably in the high single digits. It’s a premium brand and they are expanding into emerging markets. They are moving away from the carbonated drinks. 2.9% dividend yield, which should grow by about 7% a year over the next several years.

Trades at about 18X earnings with a 3% yield. Has pulled off because they had some issues with input costs which hurt margins. Margins are stabilizing now so that is going to be better. This is an incredible brand name. Have 17% of the carbonated market in the US and 22% in the developing world. The key to this story is really the emerging markets which has a huge upside. Have done a good job of diversifying their product mix. $46 in 12 months is a reasonable expectation.

In general terms, he would be cautious on the consumers’ staples area. Those big, safe, steady industries that tend to churn out reliable profits and cash flow year after year, have done so well so that now is the time to look at more cyclical industries. There are headwinds in that people are drinking less and less carbonated drinks. You’ll be fine over time but you are not going to make above average returns.

Pepsi (PEP-N) versus Coca-Cola (KO-N)? Prefers Pepsi because it also has all the junk food too. Likes the diversification. This company has come off but Pepsi has held up better because there is a US hedge fund manager that wants to split it up.

Stock has really lagged but they have brought in their bottling groups and can wring out some synergies from them and resell them down the road. They have water, vitamin water, Powerade, etc. Expectations for this company are very low. Through synergies and growing outside of North America he can see earnings from emerging markets growing maybe 8% over the next couple of years.

The difficulty with soft drink makers is that the sugared beverage business has really been going flat for some time. When you look at what it is trading at compared to its earnings, it is a very expensive stock. When he sees a stock trading at double its growth rate, red flags start to go up.

Have been focused on carbonated soft drinks but had been able to adapt to the times and bring on more products. You can’t argue with their execution and their brand value. However, it is not a cheap stock. Probably fairly valued and he wouldn’t be rushing in. Would wait for a setback and try to get it 10%-15% lower.

Great company to hold for the long-term. Valuation is not so attractive. Prefers Dr Pepper Snapple (DPS-N), the 3rd biggest soft drink maker and he is excited about their new line of soft drinks and their introduction into emerging markets. Expects that at some point in time, Coca-Cola or PepsiCo (PEP-N) will acquire this company.

PE in the high teens. Consistently make money and have been consistently growing. As long as the business continues to do what it has been doing, that multiple will be there and the stock price will go up as much as they grow earnings. The risk to this is that if anything ever does happen to the business, the threat on the downside is that you have the valuation pulling off. Also, there isn’t really much upside if you are looking for capital gain.

Great franchise and a wonderful brand. Trades at about 17X earnings so a little bit rich for a beverage company. Soft drink side of the industry, all sodas, has really struggled and they have been making their money on other beverages. Prefers Pepsi-Cola (PEP-N) because of their salty snack business which has a huge franchise in Frito-Lay. So he is more comfortable with the safety of Pepsi.
