It is a US version of the ZLB-T. This is not a time to put money to work in equities. Wait for a pull back for sure. He likes this as a defensive play.

An ETF that emphasizes on stocks with low beta. In a volatile market, this is the type of stock you want. It's made of utilities, consumer staples and discretionary. A safe and stable way to enter the market.

This is their low volatility ETFs. The ZLU.U pays distributions in US dollars. He would stick with a US index rather than an all market one, but it depends on what type of investor you are.

No tech stocks, but low volatility with McDonald's and Waste Management. Utilities that pay dividends. Good for waiting and seeing how trade headlines plays out.

A great performer for him. Solid companies in this American ETF. This is a safe way to play the U.S. BMO may have a hedged version of this. He thinks the Canadian market will outperforming American this year, so look at ZLB (the Canadian version of this). (XIC is more volatile and riskier.)

Low-vol actually gives you better returns than higher-volatility stocks. That counters popular opinion. But this is US, which he feels will underperform globally. He likes ZLU that it's in USD. However, he prefers buying a gloval low-vol ETF.

ZPW-T vs. ZWH-T. If you can afford to stay in cash and wait for markets to correct, it is preferable. He uses ZPW-T and ZWH-T as well as ZLU-T to hold his exposure to the equity market. They will fall much less than the S&P. They are not risk free.

(A Top Pick October 7/16. Down 1%.) Not Cdn$ hedged which he regrets. If you are reasonably positive on US currency in the next 12 months, it should recover quite nicely. Has a good spread of very solid individual stocks. An easy way to get into part of the US market that is basically conservative, low volatility, but you are also exposed to the currency.

If you want to invest in the US, this would be his favourite vehicle. It has done quite well for him. It took quite a hit recently because of the stronger Cdn$, so the timing is pretty good. You are getting a participation in the market, but a part of the market that is not bouncing up and down. A good way to participate in the US market.

There has been a lot of talk about low volatility strategies over the past couple of years. That is great to have until it is not great to have. When you look at a lot of low volatility ETF’s, they are a bit expensive when looking at the names that are in them. He would rather go to something closer to the S&P 500, which has a little more growth involved, or looking at some of the International ETF’s.

Low volatilities have exploded ever since the launch of PWSH S&P 500 Low ETF (SPLV-N). BMO’s spin on this has been very good and has outperformed quite a lot with everyone wanting US$s. With the recent action in the Cdn$ going down, and the contemplation that the US$ could depreciate, BMO and many others launched currency hedged versions such as Low Volatility US Equity Hedged (ZLH-T). This is a call on whether you think the US$ is going to go up or down.

This has very low volume and volume is very important. Technically ETF providers will tell you that the underlying benchmark or Index is key as to whether you can get liquidity in the market, from the standpoint of being able to redeem or create, but we are not in that market, so the next is the secondary market. He doesn’t Buy ETF’s that don’t trade actively every day.

These are companies that are not particularly multinationals, which is what he wants. Feels the high US$ has hurt some of the big multinationals. These tend to be more domestic.

Low volatility stocks have not done as well as some of the higher volatility stocks, which would typically be your momentum plays. Low volatility products have tended to underperform, which may continue for awhile. Until we get higher rates and more volatility that is when you want to be in this type of product.

Focused somewhat away from multinationals. Still thinks the US$ will continue to be strong. Good diversification.

This has been down 3 straight sessions, and today’s drop was a fair size. This is US stocks denominated. It works against you if the Cdn$ rallies to the US$. The dollar has gone from $1.27 to $1.23, which makes up a big chunk of the reversal of this ETF. Nothing wrong with the name and he thinks it is a terrific name. He wouldn’t get concerned with any short-term moves.

These products are promoted as not having as much upside in a bull market, but will limit the downside if the market turns negative. He tends to not use low volatility products, but he is starting to reconsider his position. This is a value proposition that is worth exploring, especially if you would find comfort in any kind of a potential of a downturn.
