He likes this. They are ticking every box. Has a strong balance sheet, a property in Vancouver they are looking to sell, and valuation is pretty cheap. Good earnings growth and good revenue growth. They’re also looking at a new business where they are going to be doing software as a service business model, and markets really like software service businesses, because it is high margin, predictable types of revenue. They've been blowing out estimates over the last 2 to 3 quarters.

Video surveillance technology. Just announced they are going to be launching a sort of software service product, and the market loves recurring revenues. Too early to get excited about that, but it’s interesting. They’ve had communication issues with the market in the past, which is what led to a lot of the downdraft. However, they’ve shifted strategies and are now focused on profitability. The last 2 quarters beat earnings estimates by 50% and just shy of 40%. Has a lot of cash on the balance sheet with the sale of a Vancouver property that is just going through now. (Analysts’ price target is $22.75.)

Very interesting and quite sophisticated technology. The problem is, it is a hardware company. They always have a problem of fighting against a better and cheaper mouse trap. A Chinese competitor has been quite aggressive in pricing. He doesn’t like the long-term fundamentals. If he had to choose between a Long or Short position, he would choose the Short.

This used to be a hot stock. It went through some expansion plans using some CapX, which really hurt the company. Technically, it is at resistance level, which is actually quite good. Once it breaks through that resistance level, it would be a good stock to hold onto on a go forward basis.

A provider of intelligence security systems, cameras and related software. It was once a market darling, but has stumbled badly. There has been a bit of a revolving door in the executive offices. Financial governances are not terrific. Credibility of management is a bit suspect, with a history of overpromising and under delivering. Analysts have a tough time with revenue visibility because the product is sold through a network of resellers.

The most recent quarter really did translate into earnings, and the stock had a huge move up.

Every quarter they say they are investing for growth and to get market share, but investors are saying that they don’t like spending or the impact on earnings, and the stock has been decimated. We won’t know if it is the right strategy for another 5 years, but at least they are willing to do it as opposed to a lot of others that will toe to the shareholders to just get quarterly numbers.

A hardware company that essentially provides cameras for surveillance and other analysis tools. They have just been kicked out of a bunch of indices, and he shorted the stock based on that. They seem to be very focused on growing their revenues rather than their profitability. Also, they are facing some competition from Chinese competitors. He doesn’t think people are willing to pay up for higher end cameras. Their margins are really taking a hit.

Fundamentals have always fundamentally looked good, but it has just been sliding down. They have a bit of a strategy shift, going to a loss leader strategy, where they are going to sell cheaper surveillance cameras to get their foot in the door with customers, and then up-sell them with higher quality versions of their product. Longer-term, that is probably not a bad strategy, but it was not what they sold investors in the 1st place. It is really a “show me” story.

This has been a tough one for investors in the last few years. They were really focused on hitting this $500 million revenue target, and from all accounts it looks like they are going to succeed. However, they have done it at the cost of being profitable and being cash flow positive. Sold his holdings at significant higher prices. It is probably a takeover candidate once they turn that profitability around.

This is down about 25%. They had to cut their guidance going forward because of having to take some price cuts on some of their older surveillance equipment. When you are a smaller company, revenue misses have a more meaningful impact on the bottom line. She would not be inclined to make an investment now.

(A Top Pick Aug 10/15. Down 16.87%.) Hitting their sales targets, but having a discount to pricing a little too much in some of the cameras. He was a little worried about their cash conversion rate and that they had generated cash flow which is not showing up on the balance sheet, but a lot of that was for the new plant and equipment as well as more spending on sales R&D with their new product lines coming out. Ultimately they are integrating the video surveillance market in a way that you are getting a commodity product with a fully integrated product. This company is at the front end of that. However, that and the miss on the EBITDA margins is going to cost them in the short term, so he is going to stay on the sidelines.
