(A Top Pick Aug 29/13. Up 5.76%.) Still likes it. Feels the banking sector in the US is very cheap. Capital ratios are very good. These kinds of companies will really benefit from an increase in interest rates. Balance sheets are getting better every day. Because of restrictions on what they can and cannot do on their capital side, they are going to generate tons of capital over the next several years. In that case, dividends have to go up. Also they will be able to buy back stock. Thinks it will do very, very well over the next couple of years.

(A Top Pick May 30/13. Up 9.02%.) Still a buyer at these levels. US financials, especially in the regional side, are not expensive. They have a very good opportunity as the US recovers. Located in the Southeast corner of the US, which is a high growth area.

Prefers owning US banks to Canadian banks as they have much better growth potential. Also, prefers owning regional banks to money center banks. Money center banks are involved in capital markets and are international and he prefers to be in the housing market in the US. This bank has not been one of the better run regional banks so it has not been on his radar. There are better banks available such as BB&T (BBT-N) and Bank United. (See Past Picks.)

Likes this one and likes a lot of the US banks in general. Fairly recently, the market has confirmed the quality of their balance sheet. The stock remains cheap relative to its history. Looking ahead, you should be able to realize, maybe $14, at some point during this year or early next year. Thinks this is going to happen with all of the US banks. They are slowly healing themselves.

In the southeast of the US, a very high growth area. Trades below BV. Great earnings power over the next little while. Because the housing market is looking better in the US, this company is going to benefit a lot. If the fed tapers a lot more and the yield curve steepens, this really help out banks a great deal.

In the Southeast US, a really growing area. It went through the financial crisis with a lot of difficulty. Loan losses have come down, net interest margins are stabilizing and getting better, the housing market is improving, they are over capitalized and are going to start increasing their dividends. Only trading at 1X book and around 11-12 times earnings. Not expensive. They will benefit as the US consumer continues to improve. He could see this doubling in 12 months.

Trades at a discount to BV by about 0.6-0.7 times book. Trades at about 10X earnings. Yield is not very good, but it is in a growing area of the US and has a good branch network there. Well capitalized, so he thinks you will see them increase their dividend and buyback shares. Cheap.

A great little regional bank in the Southwest US. Trading at 0.7X book. Well-capitalized and in a growing area of the US with both population and company growth. Thinks it will trade at least at Book Value over the next little while and probably 1.5 times.

Really likes US financials as he thinks they are really cheap. BV is about $10.80 and the stock is trading at about $9.38. It should really trade at above 1.5X BV. Doesn’t have much of a dividend yield, but credit quality is getting better. In the southeast US, which is a growing area with lower unemployment and improving housing. Yield of 1.28% and he expects there will be dividend increases.

A pretty solid US regional bank. Not really keen on this sector right now. Right now banks have a pretty shallow muted yield curve. If you have to own the bank right now, this would be an okay place to be.

This is a commercial/retail bank in the South/South-East US. A great growth area in the US. There is a big trend in the US housing market and how it is affecting banks. Also, these things went through a vicious cycle on the way down but now every loan on their books that was taken out since 2009 is going to be a great one on their books. After the March stress tests they will be over capitalized and will be able to increase dividends and/or buy back shares.

He’s been pretty cautious on US financials going through this rally because they have been generally under performing. Revenue has been shrinking on this one. Could be acquired but this is not a good reason to buy. He would want to see the numbers really start to improve.
