Raise it and wait for better buying days. The market has had a massive drop and is now recovering. The US Fed doesn't know what it'll do. The next recession's coming, unavoidably. He can't say how many rate hikes will come in 2019. Things could slow down quickly. And follow gold.

Percentage of cash in your U.S. equity portfolio? They are 15% cash right now, about 40% bounds and 45% equities. Doesn't love the market right now.

Cash is totally king. Still has 13% cash, instead of the 24% he had going into the mid-term elections. Helped mitigate a lot of risk. In next couple of weeks, he'll find out if there's an opportunity or not. To see if it's a bear or a bounce, he uses the 3-day rule (needs it to base after this waterfall, stop going down, and head up for 3 days in a 4-day period). If he sees this, he'll put a toe back in the water. If he doesn't, he's going to start selling.

He is cautious and not overly optimistic. Growth is slowing and interest rates are still on the rise. Thinks it's prudent to have some cash going through 2019. Depends what your options are, if you have the ability to invest in private markets he would have a lower cash weighting, but otherwise if you are more focused on public markets seeing 10-20% cash would not alarm him. Also depends how active you are, if you are an active manager of your assets you can have more cash and penny pinch on the days when markets sell-offs and add. If you are sort of a leave it and not look at it then you are likely to have less cash, closer to 10%, and look for a more meaningful correction to buy.

What would you buy if you've held cash as the markets rise? His cash is down to 4%. He may sell a little bit going forward. He likes healthcare and technology. The former will perform well in the next few years, and there's still room to grow for tech. In today's relief rally, both sectors were moving in tandem. Tech is more near-term than healthcare.

How to invest $100,000 over 6-12 month horizon? That's a short term. Get invested, because markets worldwide, especially emerging, are down now. He suggests getting into an emerging market ETF, but talk to an advisor about allocation. Canadian banks are good to buy on a pullback, because they're an oligopoly. The U.S. markets have also pulled back, though much as much as other regions. For 6-12 months, you're a trader, not an investor, so look at emerging markets to trade.

(A Top Pick Aug 23/18, Up 0%) He was cautious. He had 23% cash as of last show. He follows what the retail investor does (the dumb money) and tend to the opposite as they are often wrong at the wrong time. Institutional investors are net bullish 70% and retail investors net bearish 80% at the moment.

Cash gives you options to buy when markets fall lower or build more cash to be a shock absorber to go into GIC's, floating rate bonds paying 6% or rate reset preferreds paying 5.5%. You need these things at the top of the cycle--and one never knows when that it. He holds 12-14% cash now. He thinks this correction is temporary, so he'll be buying beaten-up stocks.

If you need to park $100,000 for 3-6 months, buy the RBC high-interst savings vehicle in the 1.5% range. Wherever you park it, make sure the cash is secure and liquid, but don't expect a high return. Generally, bank money market funds are fine.

Over the summer, he held a little more cash. There's more risk in the summer. He does this every year. This year he held 20% cash. The cash is there for buying opportunities. He moved out of staples. The market has been a little choppy, but not a sell-off.

(A Top Pick June 23, 2017). The central bank cycle was turning against liquidity. He also thought the market was significantly overvalued and thinks the US market (but not the Canadian one) has gotten more overvalued. He thinks the interest-rate increases have done damage and that business will slow down. He doesn’t know how far the market will go down, but looking at Shiller PE ratio, the market looks 40% to 50% overvalued. In addition, in every 10 year period, there has been at least one 30% correction. He sees a potential for that type of correction now, but can’t predict when it will happen. A different bubble triggers the correction each time. This time, he is watching emerging markets. The US market might continue to do well even if there is a big correction in emerging markets, partially because of the tax cut, but at some point that sugar high will wear off.
