An ETF with Microsoft as a major holding? This is the obvious choice. But he cautions over the American market in general in the next few years. Also, the American public has been looking at tech companies with suspicion. Instead of tech, he'd look at banks.

The granddaddy of them all. It's market-cap weighted, so the top 10 holdings amount to around 40-50% of this ETF. Overall, tech is not a bad sector; there is good growth and strong balance sheets. To avoid market-cap weighting, consider RYT: the equal-weight tech index which gives you far broader diversification with the top 10 holding amounting to only 16% of this ETF.

A tech ETF to anchor a portfolio? It's a little late to get into tech; tech has had its run. You're late to the party. KLX could anchor, dominated by Apple and Microsoft, but why not buy Apple instead?

A tech ETF recommendation? He likes XLK-N, which has all the big players and of course QQQ-Q and the ZQQ-T. It depends on whether you want a particular skew in Apple, Facebook, etc. The QQQ-Q provides the best diversification he thinks.

XIT-T vs. XLK-T. XIT-T is a market cap ETF. XLK-T is very diversified. XIT-T will be much more volatile. He would choose XLK-T because of diversification. The top has been in place for a while so he would be worried about them both. He would stay away, but choose XLK-T if his arm was twisted.

Sell XLK to buy XLC? Don’t. Rather than reduce XLK, you may want to rebalance it down. Just buy Google and Facebook, because they’re the dominant ones. Do you really want Verizon in there? ETFs are a great vehicle, but if you take the time to look at the holdings with weightings, why pay someone else to buy something you can buy yourself.

Technology this year has outperformed everything. He thinks that Technology is facing headwinds going forward in the way of more regulation as they are seen as monopolistic giants abusing their power. He thinks this ETF is going to do OK but there is more value in other sectors. The GICS classification is changing a little and telecommunications is moving to the communications sector, so this ETF will be affected. High liquid, low cost highly efficient way to get exposure to the sector.

QQQ-Q vs XLK-N QQQ is NASDAQ, XLK is technology. You’re going to find a lot of overlap. One thing with QQQ is BMO has the Canadian Dollar edged version, the ZQQ-T. Take a look at the website of the ETFs companies and see what weightings are and pick the one you want. Both are excellent. QQQ has some Bio stocks and a whole bunch of other stuff. For a straight technology play he would choose XLK. If you want more diversification go with QQQ.

(A Top Pick Oct 27/17 Up 4%.) Has done very well in 2017. We saw a correction take place back in November and that actually happens on a fairly regular basis. They exited the sector and then recently came back into it. They are looking to stay in this sector until at least the end of mid-January, if the markets corrects, he would consider exiting, but we are in a seasonal strength period for technology from October 10th until January 17th. Companies tends to spend more of their budget on technology at this time of the year driving the sector up.

He likes the sector. Roughly 10% of the S&P 500 is FAANG stocks. However, Netflix is approximately 0.5%. If looking at Apple and Microsoft, they have been around for 30 years and trading at normal valuations. Facebook is about 40 P/E ratio, which is fine for a growth company. He has an issue with Amazon and Netflix which are about 200X between the 2 of them, which is crazy. Amazon is a pretty big percentage of the S&P 500 at about 2%.

The kind of thing you want to own for a very long time.

They can sometimes have a tendency to see a peak around the end of January and into February, but not always. Last year, technology stocks didn’t really weaken until July. The longer-term trend on this sector is up. The bigger trend is good, so he is going to hold it into the spring. The bigger trend is good, and this is probably a decent entry point for it.

Technology is one of the best areas to be focusing on. They have pretty high margins already and the good ones are growing their revenues quickly. Businesses have to invest in technology to remain competitive. With their rapid growth, they seem to be the best positioned to grow their way out of currency headwinds. The good tech companies are the ones that tend to have pricing power.
