(Market Call Minute.) One of the largest steel companies globally. The steel business has had a very tough time and will continue to have that. There is massive overcapacity in China.

Steel companies are really under the gun right now. Demand has slowed. There is a glut of supply and prices are falling very quickly. This company has a very high debt to cash flow ratio. It is very important to look at the leverage that they have. He owns a couple of their bonds, short dated ones. He prefers their debt because it ranks higher than their equity and doesn’t suffer if they cut the dividend.

What do you think Chinese demand will be? That is the predictor of this stock. Prices are off and chart is awful. Well run but evident that people have concerns about Chinese demand. Watch until you see turn in Chinese demand.

Seasonality comes in very strong at this time of year but unfortunately, this year, it is on the downside. Significantly underperforming the market at a time when seasonality is just starting to turn negative.

Biggest steel company globally. This is a longer pull and all depends on your view as to whether we are in a recovery phase or not. You need the economy to get going. Cheap enough on a valuation basis.

Largest steel maker globally. Like all the steel stocks it has been beaten down. Steel is the major industrial sensitive area. If you think the Chinese are going to re-stimulate their economy, there will be demand for its products. Entirely a macro economic call, and nothing to do with the company.

Steel stocks were amongst the very worst performing last year. Probably a good opportunity here where good quality steel companies are trading as low as 4X cash flow. Because of high fixed costs, they will never command huge multiples. If you own, there will probably be a holding period of about 2 years with a fair amount of volatility.

When you are looking at these big steel companies, you are looking at the Asian recoveries and do you buy or not? While Asia may not grow at the same rate that it has been growing at, but he thinks the fundamental story still holds. He would be more of a trader than an investor for the long pull.

Downside is still here because steel is a major factor in economic growth. Dividend is giving some support but could be cut or eliminated completely. Won’t go up any time soon.

Biggest steel company globally. Up 10%-11% over the last year. Putting $1.2 billion in their iron ore mine in Quebec. When the world goes into a recession, steel companies go to heck in a hand basket as they are an exceptionally leveraged play on global growth. 1.9% yield.

Had a lot of issues with debt on their balance sheet and were very close to some covenants on the debt side. Expecting some good growth in the economy and steel will do well. Also own a lot of iron ore, which used to have prices set once a year but is now done quarterly.

The growth cycle is over in this industry. The consolidations are over. There have been a lot of layoffs in steel industry, but they were able to move around hours or cut them to reduce layoffs. Thinks they did a good job of that.

ArcelorMittal (MT-N) or US Steel (X-N)? Arcelor is a global play while US is an American play. Depends on your view of the global economy versus the US economy. He thinks the US will probably lead because they were the first to start stimulus.

Owns a little bit of this in some of the more aggressive accounts. Bought it as an infrastructure play. You could enter here as long as you are positive going forward on the international side and the third world. The negative is that it has quite a bit of debt. If you buy, considered as more of a trade and sell when you make 20%-30%.
