Just take the bid. Countries that need mining are often safer than countries that are perceived as lower political risk.

The company has done a very good job of turning around what was a troubled operation. Has always been a fan of the Northern Ontario Achaean gold deposits, this being a classic example. He is attracted to this company. His suspicion is that the technical problems which plagued the company 3-4 years ago are a thing of the past.

This goes beyond the commodity. It does not hinge its return strictly on whether gold goes up or down. The operational execution has been great. Eight quarters of meeting or exceeding guidance. About 180,000 ounce producer, sub-$1,000 an ounce, which is very rare for all-in costs. This is about looking for their initial resource to come out for their 144 gap zone, which he thinks could be transformational in the 1st half of next year. That could potentially double its resource and ultimately lead to potentially replacing its current short reserve life mine, taking it beyond 6 years to maybe 10-11 years.

A well run company which he thinks has good resources. The real problem is gold itself. Gold really depends on inflation eating the value of your paper currency. This is just not happening. He wouldn’t be surprised if gold breaks down through $1000.

An operator in Timmins, with production at around 200,000 ounces a year. As they have been developing this asset, they have struggled and the free cash flow has not been there, and the balance sheet has deteriorated from 2011-2013. Management has finally turned the corner in free cash flow for 4 quarters running. Free cash flow is $40-$50 million relative to its market cap of $450 million, and that is quite material.

This is going to be a little more driven by actual catalysts like drilling. It is in kind of a steady state at about 160,000 ounces a year and a low cost producer. Very good margins. The next catalyst for this is their gap zone, which is in the vicinity of their existing complex in Timmins. Management is looking for 1 million ounces for that deposit, which could effectively double their current resource.

He would rather own a shorter mine life company that actually makes plenty of free cash flow in today’s gold environment, rather than looking at gold companies with a 10-12 year mine life, but struggling to make money. This has a 5-year mine life. Have kick started their exploration program in the Timmins area, to try and replenish what they are producing, and ideally add 2-4 years to their mine life. Right now their cash “all in” costs are just under $1000 an ounce, and they should be able to generate $50-$60 million of cash flow.

Actually not a bad looking chart. It is currently well above the 2013 lows, but we still need to take out the pivotal point of around $1.20. He likes the sector and thinks it is going to turn, but lately this one has been a bit of a laggard and is not keeping up with the rest. Be patient with this and see if it takes out the $1.20 peak.

Has had some knocks lately because of it’s debt. Having a lot of debt associated with a mining company is an imbalance. How do they expand? To expand they need capital. This is not a name that he would look at. (See Top Picks.)

A disaster waiting to happen. He sees this as a producer that is very challenged going forward. His overall view on gold is very bearish. Most gold companies start to run into trouble, certainly below $1200 an ounce, but around $1100, $1000 and $1050, you have real issues with virtually everyone. It has debt and really no growth, and gold is going the wrong way.

Doesn't have a lot of exposure to gold in general, but this is one of the juniors that he has decided to play. Costs of $580 an ounce and has $70 billion in the bank. Doesn't see anything wrong with owning a company that makes money right now and continues to make money even if gold is $1000-$1100, because it's “all in” costs are just under $1000. The big knock, besides failing to meet expectations and projections, is that it has a 6 year mine life. He thinks it can make $80 million next year in cash flow and about $50 million free if gold is around $1200. He is very confident they can extend the mine life beyond 6 years.

Went through a bit of a teething period, as many of these mines do. Cash costs were quite high. Have been able to bring them down in the last several quarters, and just came out with some good numbers. One of the concerns is that they are mining above grade at just over 5 grams per ton. If you see that grade come down, you’ll see a slight bump in the overall costs. Has had a nice run. Not the cheapest stock out there, but seem to be making a turn around right now in terms of getting things under control.

With a lot of these companies the key issue is cost of production. As we went through this tunnel, cost of production was much higher than the stock price for a lot of the companies. This is why they have been hurt. He is pretty comfortable that gold is going to go back up and all these companies are going to look great.

Bought and sold this a number of times in the last 4-5 years and is currently out of it, but kicking himself somewhat. Feels he should’ve started seeing some of the signs of a turnaround. Really pulled up their socks in the last 6-9 months. Had some issues and ramped up their mines. Had a great last couple of quarters. Guidance seems to be going up. Very interested in revisiting this, but he’ll wait for a pullback.
