PAST TOP PICK
Crescent Point Energy Corp (CPG-T)

(A Top Pick May 13/13. Up 2.85%.) His view on this is still positive. Their last acquisition, in Utah, is very favourable for the company. Close to refining facilities. Thinks they got it opportunistically and could be a real gem for them. Good dividend and he would like to see them keep it stable, take some of the money and pay down debt. Still likes.

COMMENT
Crescent Point Energy Corp (CPG-T)

He is pretty positive on this company. Made a big acquisition in Utah a few years ago, which he thinks is going to play out for them quite well. The biggest knock against this company is that they continued to issue stock frequently, but not so much lately. Pays a good yield. There are worse companies that you could own in the energy space.

Crescent Point Energy Corp (CPG-T)

Feels that the dividend is safe. Made a great acquisition about a year ago in Utah that has worked out quite well, US$ denominated and close to refining. The biggest issue against them is that they are serial issuers. Every deal they do, they issue more equity. Management has grown the company well. He is positive on this name.

Crescent Point Energy Corp (CPG-T)

This has been beaten down along with all the other oil names. Generally speaking this is a positive. One of the better names in terms of growth. His biggest issue is that they tended to issue equity fairly often. They may not be doing that right now, but when times get better that could continue. That creates a big dilution.

COMMENT
Crescent Point Energy Corp (CPG-T)

This is on his list. The reduction in their dividend was a really meaningful step. In effect management is saying that they cannot pay this out anymore. This could be one of the better names coming out of this environment. Have great assets. Also, have not borrowed as heavily as other companies. He would be a buyer at the right price.

COMMENT
Crescent Point Energy Corp (CPG-T)

A well run company. The best thing management did was to reduce their dividend. In the old days they paid out a lot of money in dividends, and they were serial issuers. His hope is that they do not raise the dividend if oil prices go up, or to start issuing equity again. He is looking at this one.

COMMENT
Crescent Point Energy Corp (CPG-T)

Average down? His biggest issue is that they seem to be serial issuers of stock. They continue to dilute the existing shareholder base, not a friendly thing to do. The US assets are great and they have increased production, but it is important to focus on production growth per share, and this one gets diluted down. They’ve already cut their dividend.

HOLD
Crescent Point Energy Corp (CPG-T)

They hold high quality assets, but questions the structure of the company and how management really raises equity. Too frequently for him. Any time you do anything, management goes out and raises equity, diluting existing shareholders, making the former dividend harder to pay.

He focuses on larger integrated oil/gas companies. Well run company with A lot of growth ahead. Operates in a region of North America that has an enormous amount of potential. A lot of land with light, sweet oil. If you are a growth investor, this is one you could continue to own.

Converted to a Corp and managed to leave their dividend at a pretty high level. He would rather have iUnits S&P/TSX Energy ETF (XEG-T).

High yield of 5.9%. He is positive on commodities and energy and this stock will be a beneficiary of that. Primarily a yield, but you’ll also get a lift on it.

DON'T BUY
Crescent Point Energy Corp (CPG-T)

A phenomenal success story.  A popular stock.  He has been on the sidelines for 3 years.  They get a lot of criticism for issuing a lot of stock.  That is a bit of an unfair criticism because their strategy is to issue a high dividend and then use the stock as a currency.  He doesn’t have a problem with that.  But he is concerned about decline rates in the first year.  They will lose 30% of production this year and have to replace it plus the amount they want to grow this year.
