The only way it goes higher is if there's a white knight out there, but he doesn't see anyone paying more than Onex. Tech analysis has nothing more to add, because the stock moved up to the offer price of the cash takeout.

There is some market risk in the overall market. It is an all cash deal. You will get $31 for it. There is a 4% difference between market and the deal. If you can do better than 4% somewhere else with a similar degree of risk, then you should sell. He would take some money off the table.

Considering the Boeing 737 crash. They came out with good numbers and guidance in the last quarter after a few bad quarters. Their suspension of the 737s is not a huge thing, but rather a nuance. He doesn't like airline stocks and prefers Air Canada that he just sold. This is not a bad entry point. Be careful: have a buy and sell price.

In the past, he has favoured WestJet because its management is disciplined, they operated a single type of plane, they had happy non-unionized employees, and they focused on the Canadian market. But then they decided they wanted to be Air Canada. They operate several types and sizes of planes on more routes--if he had to invest in an airline now, it probably would NOT be Westjet. They were the Southwest of Canada but they have destroyed what they had, WestJet’s share price has been drifting sideways while Air Canada’s has been rising. He asserted that WestJet’s problems are all self-inflicted.

The stock has been going down. It is approaching a critical level according to Model Price theory: EBB-1 level is $17.80. His Model Price is $26.64, which is almost a 50% upside. However, if the stock drops below EBB-1, it could drop to EBB-2, which is $15. He would take a half-position at this level, but if it goes lower, he would sell and buy closer to $14.82. The market is concerned about recent news, such as the unionizing of its staff. However, a positive catalyst in the news could boost the stock an easy 25%. Making money on this stock might require trading around the levels rather than buying and holding.

He doesn’t own this. Airlines are very cyclical and are traditionally poor capital allocators. WestJet has been better with capital, but there are concerns after the pushing out of their CEO. The underlying issue might have been labor relations and perhaps the new CEO can manage this better. However, airlines are getting late in their cycle, so the sector has a lot of risk. WestJet is trying to grow internationally, which is inconsistent with their original focus on the local market using one type of plane.

They now have more than one type of aircraft, and instead of just a North American company, they are flying to Europe and want to fly to Asia. Looking at the possibility of ultra low-cost carriers coming in. In the US, the constraining factor is gate capacity at the airports, but it is not as limited in Canada. This company and Air Canada are vulnerable to a well financed ultra low-cost competitor.

Airlines really come down to being a high fixed cost model. On borrowing money, interest rates are low. Also, oil prices are low. They’ve had good growth. Announced they are going to launch an ultra low-cost carrier, which should bode well for them. Be aware that when rates go up and energy prices increase, that will have an effect on airlines.

Airlines are not exactly bastions of free cash flow. They are going to be challenged for the next while, having such a large base in Western Canada. Unless oil comes roaring back, they are going to be challenged for growth and, as a result, will have to move further and further into direct competition with Air Canada (AC-T), which usually never works out well for airlines. There are better names to own.

There is a fair bit of positive news on airlines, including low fuel prices and low interest rates. There is also a positive pick up in economic growth. Times are working in their favour in terms of economic growth, energy prices and interest rates. You have to be really careful for when and if those change.

Doesn’t own airlines, because he always felt it was a difficult sector. Too many variables that can hurt the stock. This has been hurt because of Alberta. If he were going to look at an airline, it would probably be this one, because you are seeing Calgary and oil slowly getting better. These are hard stocks to own, and would suggest using them as a trade, rather than a hold for the long-term.

In general, he is fairly constructive on airlines. Energy prices are coming down and interest rates are at low levels. With this airline, you are getting a lot of noise of what is happening in Alberta, which has been a hurdle for them. As cycles go, this one offers a good product. The environment is right and the economy is right, so overall that growth should continue. You could wait and buy it opportunistically on bad headline news.

This airline faces 3 challenges in the near future. 1.) They have to deal with allegations of sexual misconduct. 2.) They are facing a union challenge. 3.) They have a new low cost competitor. Low fuel prices have been a tremendous boon to airlines, and this airline, along with Air Canada (AC-T) have been very good at managing their load factors. He has taken a vow of not owning any airline stocks.

WJA-T vs. AAL-Q. On AAL-Q, the industry has consolidated so the airlines have pricing power. 10 years ago all these airlines were losing money. There are ultra low cost carriers coming in and undercutting the others and there is a bit of a price war going on. This is not happening in Canada. He would stay out of the US. WJA-T is safer than AC-T.

Doesn’t own any airline stocks as it is very cyclical. You couldn’t ask for a better management team or a better quality company, if you’ve got a long-term time horizon. However, there are recession risks in Canada and concerns about capacity and pricing. A lot of those things are being reflected in the valuation. If oil prices go up and economic fundamentals stabilize, there should be some firmness and pricing which should prop up the stock and the valuation. This is a good entry point. Dividend yield of 3.6%.

On a chart going back to 2012, there was a pretty nice upward trend line, and that broke down in early 2015, and pretty aggressively. Since then there have been multiple breaks of support. There was a level of support at around $24 that was tested recently, but it broke. At this point it took out another low from the summer. You are possibly going to find a bounce here, but he would want to see it bounce off the $16.50-$17 level and hold before he got involved.

Transportation stocks, airlines in particular, tend to do well from October into November, peaking around the US Thanksgiving. This one has had a seasonal gain of about 15% over that time frame. It has a large uptick at the end of the year, which is what you want to take advantage of. Take advantage of the weakness more towards October, and if it continues to go lower, there should be some very appealing buying opportunities into the end of the year.

On the negative side, they have been adding capacity, which is something you never want to hear in the airline business. When capacity is tight, airlines print money. When they start adding capacity, not so much.

Transportation sector tends to do well from about September all the way through to the end of October and into November. It tends to peak around the US Thanksgiving holiday. Then the following period of seasonal strength is from January all the way through to May. This stock did well for the 1st period of seasonal strength, but didn’t do so well for the 2nd period. There are quite a few concerns around the transportation area right now.

Short (and Long Allegiant Travel Company.) This airline, Air Canada (AC-T) and all airlines globally benefited from the huge drop in crude oil and jet fuel prices. A lot of the customer base for this airline is in Western Canada, so they are going to be impacted. Also, for the weaker Cdn$ it is going to be more expensive to travel abroad.

This is a good example of one of those stocks that, despite the stock market moving up or at least sideways, it is rounding over. It is just starting to play its $27 support level. It has been over a few times in the past year. If it broke down through that $27 level, he would exit. If it holds, it might be okay. Starting to look a little weak.

Thinks there is a structural change going on in the airline industry. They are finally in a position where they are cleaning up their balance sheets and starting to generate positive free cash flow. Much more disciplined with capacity. For this reason he prefers Air Canada (AC-T), but they are both well-run companies. This is exposed more towards Western Canada. With the slowdown in the oil patch, there is some concern about the Alberta economy.

His philosophy on airlines is “don’t invest”. He has seen too many airlines over the years go under for various reasons. It is in a good environment. The cost of fuel has gone down. Travel is definitely up. They should do quite well, but these stocks tend to be pretty darn volatile at times. It may be that an increase in the price of oil and jet fuel would be enough to knock these stocks right down again.

Thinks they missed their last couple of earnings reports, which is why the stock has fallen. It is below its 200 day moving average and the 50 day is now falling. This is usually not a very good sign. He would prefer Southwest Airlines (LUV-N).

Got beat up a little bit today. Reported slightly lower load factors for March, and a bunch of short term investors/speculators were dumping the stock. Trading at 8X earnings. A dividend payer with a growing dividend stream. This is the 10% of the airline industry that you can actually invest in. Good investment long-term, and right now it is trading at a discount. This is a great opportunity.

One benefit this has seen with a lower oil prices is that they haven’t passed this on to consumers. As far as hedging goes, they can go out fairly far, 1 or 2 years. This is exceptionally well-managed for an airline. This would be an okay spot to get in if you are inclined.

It has come off a bit after doing very well. It is the perpetual problem with airlines where they overbuild capacity and demand is not there to keep it up. They are expanding into more holiday travel. It sold off on the Western Canada worries and he thinks it is overdone. They have this economy of premiums and they continue to find ways to add to their revenue line. The risk is if the economy turns down and air travel falls.

A lot of people prefer Air Canada (AC-T) currently. Both companies benefit from lower oil prices. The one issue she would have with West Jet is that a lot of their routes are based out of Alberta, so there could be some weakness in terms of frequency and load factors. In the short term, she is indifferent, but on the long run she prefers West Jet to Air Canada.

Airlines right now are going to benefit from lower jet fuel prices, which is one of their major inputs. The other 2 major costs for airlines are leasing their planes and labour costs. This company has most of its fleet lease off its balance sheet. Right now he would say this is probably the most profitable period we have seen for world airlines in recent memory. However, he will not give up his pledge to never buy airline stocks.

Chairman has trimmed his personal stake by over $40 million, but still owns over 1% of the company. If this was because of tax planning, which it often is, that is a fair enough reason. If you see more than one insider, particularly the CFO, that would be a worry. This doesn’t change his opinion. In the Canadian Airlines, you are seeing an expansion. This one has no union and strong growth ahead of it. Low cost base because of its model. Thinks this continues to grow.

A little more defensive than Air Canada and in better shape with newer planes and no unionization. Not only has there been a pullback in price on the stock, but there has been a pullback in fuel, which is the largest operating cost. On a forward basis, they trade from 4.5% to 7.5% X EBITDAR (the “R” is for plane rentals). Also, it has been oversold. Yield of 1.53%.

There have been a lot of things happening in the airline industry including Ebola, currency, oil prices, but airline stocks have actually done quite well. Seasonally the transportation sector will be fading away in a few weeks time. Well-run company and is performing quite well. Have a lot of things going for it. Have increased baggage fees and fuel costs have dropped substantially. If it starts to underperform in the next few weeks, he would pull out.

Generally the airlines have done extremely well over the last year or so. Doesn’t like participating in the airline industry. Thinks they will be squeezed a little by fuel costs, particularly in Ontario with their proposed tax on jet fuel. Airlines in general have extremely high capital costs and are extremely expensive to run. This is not an area that he would be jumping into.

Has held the stock right from its IPO. This is in a cyclical and very difficult industry. There are a select few of business models globally, that over time consistently make money. Airlines have a few key imports such as fuel, labour and capital costs. People are a very big part of the business, and a really good business model globally, consistently makes money for shareholders with very good relationships with employees. This company ties in their employees with options and profit sharing. His target is $33.

Over the long-term, the airline industry has been a very bad sector for investors. This industry, particularly in the US, is going through a great deal of structural change with an immense amount of consolidation and cost-cutting going towards more efficient planes. Less price competition and more rational behaviour. There is some concern about competition and if the good times can keep happening. Prefers Air Canada, but has a positive outlook for both.

He is a firm believer that if you own an airline, it is a Trade only, not a long-term investment. This one has been a good stock to be in, but generally this is a trade only and is very cyclical. Declining Cdn$ hurts their cross-border traffic. Good economies help them. Another thing that has helped them is the consolidation in the North American airline industry in the US. This stock has probably got hurt recently by probably getting overvalued, a weaker Cdn$, but have also gone into a lot of expansion into regional markets. The good days are gone here for now and he would wait for it to stop going down, which doesn’t look like it is happening here.

Air Canada (AC.B-T) or WestJet (WJA-T)? The airline model is a highly leveraged model. Very high fixed costs. As revenues go up or expenses are cut, it can create a huge change in earnings. This one is growing nicely with revenues up about 7% for the year. They have less cost-cutting to do so there is less change taking place. They are being helped by fuel prices being muted, which is likely to continue.

Stock has done incredibly well and the company is doing well. The airline cycle is going on and hasn’t been ruined yet by putting on more capacity and irrational competition.
