Revenues have skyrocketed, but at the same time so has their debt, a danger signal. They pay a very healthy dividend and have a lot of good assets. Lately, utilities have done pretty darn well, but they come into favour and out of favour. If he owned this, he might consider selling it. He would look very carefully at the debt load and ask himself “what if”, and that would be somewhat worrisome. Dividend yield of 5.2%.

An Alberta utility with some gas pipelines and processing. Buying a Washington DC based utility in Virginia, 2000 miles apart. It is going to take them a year or more for them to sort through all the regulations. Looks like it is accretive. They’ve raised the $2.5 billion externally, and it all went through quite nicely. It doesn’t seem like a natural fit to him. This has a great yield of about 7%.

He wouldn’t own this. Doesn’t have an utter conviction in management. Trades at a discount multiple relative to its peers, but would suggest that some of that has been through poorish execution over the past couple of years. There was also an over reliance on debt, which they’ve done a good job of paying down. There is lingering concern about inventory at one of their key growth plays. It’s fine, but there are other names he would prefer.

It is very difficult to make a fundamental argument for this marijuana company. It looks like the Canadian government is going to legalize marijuana, making good on their election promise. However, from an investment standpoint, he has a tough time valuing the market size. Technically, he would like to see the company do a nice big U and get back up towards $18, consolidate, and then move on towards new highs. To initiate a position, these levels are relatively good, but speculative and shouldn’t be a massive percentage of one’s portfolio.

Thinks it was completely full of conflicts of interest. The investment community is supporting this because the CEO is a wonderful guy in promoting things. Canadian Banks. These have been good long term stocks to own, but in general, US banks are more attractive. They’ve been depressed and valuation multiples have been about the same as Canadian banks. However, the environment is going to be better as far as rising rates for better net interest margins. Why are pipelines, utilities and telcos affected by interest rates? The reason is, they have very little growth and tend to pay out earnings in the form of dividends. As a result, because rates are so low, those companies, cash flows and dividends have become so prized right now that investors are trading at a premium to the market. In Canada, a 1% move typically corresponds to a 10% reduction in price on pipelines and utilities. However, that doesn’t really impact companies until you get to a certain threshold level of around 3.5% of a bank of Canada rate 10-year.

This has gone nowhere in 5 years. There is an overhead supply in 2014-2015, and as a result these investors are caught Long, and are selling and pushing it down. He doesn’t see any strong buying here, and as a result would not recommend holding. It is making lower highs and lower lows.

This got bought by Bell Canada (BCE-T), but it wasn’t a great company as they had a lot of issues. If they had stayed on that path, they would have probably had to cut their dividends. Keep the Bell shares, as it is a great company, has a great dividend and continues to perform well.
