Market. He is scaling back risks ahead of the central banks hiking interest rates. 9 out of the last 11 recessions have come off the backs of Central banks raising rates. He has some concerns regarding the yield curve. It would only take about 3 US raises for them to get an inverted yield curve. An inverted yield curve is a pretty strong signal that a recession is fairly imminent. Given that we are fairly long in the tooth in this expansion out of the 2008 recession, it is probably prudent to take some risk off the table at this time. Some of the leading indicators are rolling over a little. Feels the central banks are a little behind the curve. US GDP figures, and to a lesser extent in Canada, as well as inflation figures in both countries, are now flashing warning signs that they should be raising rates.

A US defence stock? You might prefer looking at a Canadian company CAE (CAE-T) which makes simulators for training of pilots. You could also look at General Dynamics (GD-N) or Northrop Grumman (NOC-N). Most governments are really strapped in terms of cash, so it might be an area you would take money away from. There is political risk in buying defence stocks.

Long-term hold? P/E ratio 180, which really takes you back. However, if you adjust the accounting Net Income to strip out the non-cash items, the cash P/E ratio is in the high 20s-30s. If looking to hold this for at least 3 years, it is a tremendous company.

Packaging. It amazes him that there is a very strong contingent of packaging companies in Canada. This one recently bought a UK company that literally prints money. It has relatively strong organic growth, and a very, very active pipeline of acquisitions. A relatively volatile stock, but a company he really, really likes. Wait for a bit of softness before getting in.

A wonderful retail story which has done really, really well. Like many retailers, this has come off with Amazon (AMZN-Q) taking over Whole Foods (WFM-Q). Not sure the people that shop at Whole Foods is the same demographics of those who shop at Costco, and feels this would be a buying opportunity.

When a Short report came out, this dropped about 30%. Had sold about half his position in the $11 range to take some risk off the table. The stock is now close to the level, where if it breaches it, he will be selling his position. Believes their business is strong. He likes the company, but is just a little worried about it technically right now. On a P/E ratio, they seem really expensive. They have a nice ROE.

2017-07-10 PAST TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart CZO-X Ceapro Inc.

(A Top Pick July 4/16. Down 42.48%.) A biotech company out of Alberta and doing some very, very interesting things. They opened a new plant, and he feels the transition from the old plant to the new one has been bumpy. They’ve thrown up 2 lacklustre quarters in a row, and there really hasn’t been a lot of communication from management. He owns a very small position. If you don’t own, wait on the sidelines until a nice quarter comes out or some sort of guidance from the company.

2017-07-10 PAST TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart DOL-T Dollarama Inc.

(A Top Pick July 4/16. Up 34.83%.) This is, bar none, one of the best retailers in North America. Exceptionally well run. Has a very high ROE. Their original runway in the opening up new stores was 1400, and currently are at about 1100. They have recently increased that to 1700.

2017-07-10 TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart DOL-T Dollarama Inc.

All 3 of his top picks have an element of defensiveness to them. This company has had a massive run, but they still have a long runway for growth with another 600 stores that they would like to open in Canada. They’ve been recently testing their model with some Dollar Stores in Central America, where he thinks they will make their next move. Dividend yield of 0.36%. (Analysts’ price target is $140.)

Pipelines don’t quite have the ROE he is looking for, but has just initiated a dividend growth model for clients. Pipelines are very steady dividend payers. This is one of the better managed pipeline companies.

2017-07-10 BUY Must be logged in to use chart MTY-T MTY Food Group

One of the best performing stars on the TSX over the past 10 years. Owns a bunch of food court franchises, and are a consolidator in that space. Very consistent ROE generators. This is one of those stocks that completely flies below the radar screen.

A bus manufacturer out of Winnipeg. Very well-run. They recently did a transformational acquisition of Motor Coach International, so are now the largest bus manufacturer in North America. Feels they have a long runway of growth. Reasonably valued and also pays a bit of a dividend.

One of the leaders in diabetic drugs. A very consistent ROE. One of the rare high ROE companies that have a healthy dividend, just north of 3%. One problem he has with companies that produce pharmaceuticals, is that they almost always have to be having blockbuster drugs. This is probably a reasonable time to buy this.

Had a tremendous upswing in 2015, and then the price collapsed. A rollup company that are buying clinics. They are similar in some respects to CRH Medical (CRH-T) and Nobilis Health (HLTH-A). There were some questions regarding management. Wait to see more technical strength before entering this.

He screens for companies that have a high ROE, and this company came through. It looks like they have come off a little from their recent highs, so this may be a good entry point.
