Market. He is negative on Canada, and prefers where the risk/return balance makes sense for his investors, because he is capital reservation first, always looking at risks, so sometimes it makes sense to avoid an area. The backdrop for Canada, looking forward, is just not as rosy as the 4%-4.5% GDP growth would have you believe. We are probably in the midst of a policy error by the Bank of Canada. The problem is, we are nowhere near the inflation target and all his factors don’t suggest strong growth going forward.

You have a mid-30% grower here, which is phenomenal. This is going into earnings, and he gets really skittish when a graph is going from bottom left to top right in a chart, because a lot can happen. With something like this, if you had a really big whopping gain, consider paring it back.

Well-run. They have good capital markets exposure. Of the 4 money centred banks, this is the most domestically exposed, which is a positive. Technically, it is basically going sideways. There credit/loss has been great. Just announced a $12 billion buyback. He would prefer J.P. Morgan (JPM-N), but both look pretty good.

This is big and is more diversified than others, so you are not buying a binary outcome stock. He likes biotech, but would approach it from the equal weight standpoint by going through the SPDR S&P Biotech ETF (XBI-N). Celgene is a good name.

2017-08-09 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart COST-Q Costco Wholesale

He doesn’t like the sector. A lot of the hit came from the Amazon acquisition of Whole Foods. This company probably has the most defensible business model of the group. Technically it broke down and is in a negative group for him, so he wouldn’t be there. There are a lot of headwinds coming.

2017-08-09 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart CSX-Q CSX Corp

Hunter Harrison came in and there has been a lot propping it up. Fundamentals have not fallen flat and the chart has come back a little, so it is not looking so bad. Going forward, the expectation is for a pretty reasonable 20X PE on top of a 15%-20% earnings growth. If transports continue to roll, this is going to be hit.

Unfortunately, it had a big earnings miss. A very whippy stock. It can be a big pop or a big drop on earnings numbers. There is a lot of hype and expectations. Technically it has broken because of its bad earnings quarter, and it is going to face a long road up.

(A Top Pick Feb 8/17. Up 16.48%.) They have a fantastic stream of commercials on right now. The propensity for people to move back online and trade has really increased.

2017-08-09 TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart ETFC-Q ETrade Financial Corp.

This just put in a share buyback, close to 10% of the market cap, and needs to be completed before February 2018. There is tax reform and this is a 38% high tax bracket payer, and for the go forward earnings, this is a good thing.

2017-08-09 PAST TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart GOOGL-Q Alphabet Inc. (A)

(A Top Pick Feb 8/17. Up 13.43%.) A 20% grower. It is amazing that a company this size can do that. It comes from the fact that it has a large pie, and 66% of ad spending is still off-line. The runway is long for them. They also have Cloud services. The knock is that they have to get other bets spending under control, it is running at $4 billion per year.

2017-08-09 PAST TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart HON-N Honeywell International

(A Top Pick Feb 8/17. Up 16.87%.) He likes that this is based on the connectivity aspect. Whether it is on the aerospace side or the industrial side, they want to use software to connect all the processes in machines and have them speak to each other.

2017-08-09 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart HPE-N Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co.

This gives a little more enterprise security, and has a little more growthier things going on than HPQ-N. Less dividend yield, but more growth. It is struggling through a bit of earnings growth right now, so be a little cautious.

2017-08-09 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart HPQ-N Hewlett-Packard Co

One of the knocks against this has been its desktop bias. Has a good dividend yield and is understood to be a single digit grower with a more reasonable PE. If you like a reasonable and growing dividend, then this is not a bad idea. However, it is going to be a long road and he thinks you can do better.

2017-08-09 TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart INDA-US iShares MSCI India ETF

India is a 6%-7% GDP grower with a long runway. On infrastructure, they have major plans in place. It recently had a hiccup when they brought in the demonetization in 2016. Basically, everybody now has to have a metric identification card. It pulled all the money out of the banking and cash market, and into the banking system. Since 2014, they’ve had $10 billion in bank deposits, which has legitimized a significant portion of the economy, and kind of got it on track. Now they are putting GST in place. Everything is chugging along to upscale this economy.

2017-08-09 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart JPM-N JP Morgan Chase & Co

This is best in breed. A phenomenally well run franchise. You have to think of this in 2 components, capital markets orientation and balance sheet lending and deposit institution. Doesn’t believe we are going to get a super yield curve. He does like the capital markets business, so instead of J.P. Morgan, you might want to look at the iShares D J Broker-Deal ETF (IAI-N), but it is tough to go wrong with J.P. Morgan.
