Market. He is a little cautious. August/September are traditionally not the best times for equity markets. Valuations are relatively high. Complacently levels in investors is quite high. At some point something is going to rattle the markets and there will be a correction. Looking at the S&P 500 with multiples of 18-19 times earnings, a lot of that is being justified by low rates. Rates are going to go up over time. The political gridlock in Washington is also a potential concern. Some of the market staying where it is, really depends upon tax reform, etc. getting pushed through.

2017-08-29 HOLD Must be logged in to use chart AAPL-Q Apple

A very well-run company. A very strong branded franchise, but not as cheap as it used to be. The question is, are they going to be able to continue to innovate and have people continuing to refresh their iPhones. The risk on a hardware company is that at some point there could be new technology or a new provider with something new and different. Because of this, he always prefers service type businesses. This company is now building up their service business.

2017-08-29 HOLD Must be logged in to use chart CJT-T Cargojet Inc

Not the most liquid stock in the world which, combined with the summer doldrums and trading volumes drying up in August, might be part of the reason for volatility. It has been a well executed story over the last number of years, and has benefited from increased ordering online.

Excellent business. They benefit from being a harvester and distributor of seafood globally. Has a very strong position, owning quotas to fish freshwater fish in Canada. The stock pulled back because there were some temporary issues last year. It is cheaper than it has been in a while. Thinks they are going to have a great year in 2017/2018. Dividend yield of 1.9%. (Analysts’ price target is $14.75.)

2017-08-29 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart CM-T Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce

One of the more domestically focused Canadian banks without large US/international operations. There has been a lot of concern about the Canadian housing market and concerns over loan losses, etc., which would affect this bank a little more than some of its peers. Also, foreign investors have taken a negative view on Canadian housing. Also, a lot of people feel US banks are good value. He favours US banks over Canadian banks.

2017-08-29 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart CPG-T Crescent Point Energy Corp

Owns a very small position. He is not buying more, which has less to do with fundamentals of the business and more to do with sentiment on energy and on the company. Historically, the street had rewarded them for making acquisitions, but more recently they have not rewarded them. Now the company has to batten down the hatches and focus on operational performance, generating cash flow and paying down debt. This trades at a low multiple and pays a nice dividend. As a long-term play, if you think oil prices are going to be at $45-$50 or higher, it is one he would hold onto.

(A Top Pick Aug 17/16. Down 26.2%.) This did not work out, so he exited his position. They operate and own nursing homes which is a pretty good business. There were 2 things that impacted them. They have a fair bit of debt, and as well, there has been an overbuild of seniors’ homes in the last number of years.

2017-08-29 HOLD Must be logged in to use chart DIS-N Walt Disney

There’s been a lot of concerns, particularly over the ESPN franchise, a key part of the business and very profitable. With all the issues over cord cutting, ESPN is not able to hold viewers the way people thought they would. Longer-term, if the stock pulls back enough and gets cheap enough, it will probably be a good opportunity. They have great content and great brand. They have the theme park business and the movie production business, and over time ESPN is going to be a very valuable franchise.

2017-08-29 BUY on WEAKNESS Must be logged in to use chart GOOGL-Q Alphabet Inc. (A)

If a long-term investor, he would not sell this, but would Hold, and if it pulls back, add more. One of the go-to names. From a technology standpoint, it has a very dominant market position. From a search and online advertising standpoint, these are trends that are poised to continue. It is not that expensive a stock. If you back out the cash, it is trading at 17 or 18 times PE multiple.

2017-08-29 SELL Must be logged in to use chart HBC-T Hudson Bay Co.

This is such a sectoral challenged business being a department store. A lot has been discussed about its valuable real estate, but at the end of the day it’s the stores they are operating that cannot afford the lease payments to be in those prime locations. Ultimately, at some point, the model breaks down.

A base metals producer. It is viewed as a pretty well-run company. Solid balance sheet. He prefers to stick to more predictable businesses.

2017-08-29 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart LIQ-T Liquor Stores N. A.

This is a pretty good steady business. It has a dominant position in Alberta and a very nice business in British Columbia. The recent quarter showed they had some struggles in their smaller US business. The new management and board are doing the right things. They are trying to improve inventory turns, putting money into revamping their very large store base in Alberta. All of those changes should lead to a leaner cost structure, and improve margins in their Canadian store base. Thinks there is potentially a $14-$15 share price over the next couple of years.

2017-08-29 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart MFC-T Manulife Financial

They’ve made a million-dollar profit in the last 5 quarters. Why is it going down? In the shorter term, life insurance businesses are very equity sensitive, and particularly interest rate sensitive. The expectation of rates going up in the future, is one reason you would want to own this. Sometimes there is noise in the results of the lifecos and are complex to interpret. There has been a lot of uncertainty regarding interest rates. A well-run company with a global franchise and significant exposure to Asia, so are well positioned over the long-term. If a long-term investor, this is a good one to hold.

(A Top Pick Aug 17/16. Up 20.09%.) He made a profit and felt the shares had become fully valued, so exited his position. If the price pulled back for some reason, he would probably look to re-enter it. Would prefer it at under $30. Feels it is fairly valued where it is today.

A really interesting company and not well known, but the 2nd largest producer of instant scratch lottery tickets globally. Although a value investor, he likes this more now at $13 than he did at $8. They just made an acquisition and are expanding their business at video/lottery terminals. Has a new facility they built in the US to expand production capacity of instant scratch tickets by 35%. There are very high barriers to entry. Trades at only about 7X the EBITDA potential over the next couple of years, which should be more like a 9X multiple. Dividend yield of 0.9%. He can see upside to at least $18 a share. (Analysts’ price target is $15.50.)
