Market. Investing is understanding the risk profile of the investment you are making. For example, if investing in healthcare, the ball has been volleying back and forth and we are hearing lots of rhetoric. If you invest based on the daily news feed, you are really not going to end up in a very good place. We have to understand what is likely to end up happening. Both sides want the vast majority of Americans to be insured, so let’s go to a place that offers that insurance, and know that despite the volleying going on, the likelihood is that insurers, especially the ones in size and scale, are going to get the volume and probably the pricing power.

2017-03-16 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart AAPL-Q Apple

Apple (AAPL-Q) or Alphabet (GOOGL-Q)? He owns both, and both are great holdings. The amazing thing about this one is that they have about 1 billion basically captive users of their products. What makes that even more impressive is that there is a 93% loyalty rate. They produce a ton of cash. A 3rd of their market cap is in cash. Trading well below the market multiple. A great core holding for any portfolio.

A payroll and HR company. A fairly pricey stock. Trades at about a 40% premium to the market. 70% of their business comes from payroll services and 30% from Human Resources operations. Over the last 6-7 years, the US has produced 15 million private sector jobs, which is great for a company like this. This is now a little too rich, and a little too late to the cycle.

2017-03-16 TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart ANTM-N Anthem Inc

A US health insurance company. The whole area is in turmoil right now. They insure about 40 million Americans. Even with all of the turmoil, the whole idea from a logical standpoint is that both the Republicans and the Democrats have vowed that they want no one to be left behind, that they want insurance. Ultimately, if insurance is going to work, it has to be very broad. Dividend yield of 1.5%. (Analysts’ price target is $174.)

2017-03-16 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart BA-N Boeing

US defence for a long-term hold? Defence has run up dramatically on the so-called Trump trade. The proposed budget had a $54 billion increase in defence spending. He has played the sector a little differently through owning Boeing, a commercial producer, but also a defence contractor. A small piece of their business is dedicated to defence. The company has about a $500 billion backlog, and on the commercial side they are in full production. This is really a cash flow story. Their planes are really in high demand because they are fuel efficient, which represents profitability to their customers.

2017-03-16 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart BAC-N Bank of America

This is a long-term asset, and you have to think of it in the long terms. It has had quite a rise since the fall, at about $15-$16 to over $25 today. Yesterday US banks traded off and bond market backed up, which caused people some surprise. Believes people bought the rumour and were selling the news, and when the Fed came out and did exactly what they were expecting, the market acted disappointed. That is only one day, which does not make a trend. He expects the bond market will turn around and we will see higher rates and lower bond prices, with higher equity prices for financials. (See Top Picks.)

2017-03-16 TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart BIIB-Q Biogen IDEC Inc.

A bio pharmaceutical. If you look at the traditional Pharma space, the chemical-based companies, the bio-based companies were always out there, coming along, but basically not making a lot of money and were often single drug companies, virtually reinvesting all their cash flow. They have now matured and into much stronger growth companies than the traditional pharmas. They also have lower multiples than they did 5-6 years ago. That makes it quite attractive. (Analysts’ price target is $305.)

This is a US limited partnership, and you want to make sure you don’t run into a tax filing problem. He would suggest you get some tax advice from a professional. This company is basically a private equity firm with about $300 billion in assets. About a 3rd of it right now is in cash, waiting for opportunities. They’ve had good payouts, but the payouts are lumpy, as it depends on when they monetize different projects. They’ve been pretty good at what they’ve done, but they really haven’t been rewarded.

2017-03-16 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart COST-Q Costco Wholesale

This model is fantastic. Basically, they make nothing on the merchandise they sell and 100% of their profitability comes from membership fees. Retailers are out of fashion right now, especially brick and mortar ones, because of the new age of ordering online and e-commerce as well as border tax implications. Only about 25% of their merchandise comes from outside the US borders, so they are somewhat insulated. People pay up for it, so the PE is somewhere in the high 20s. If they continue doing what they are doing, a mid-20s multiple is reasonable. He would not be comfortable paying this multiple for his clients.

2017-03-16 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart CSCO-Q Cisco

Thinks the dividend is safe. It has become a mature cash cow. They are reinventing themselves from the old router and switching company. If you look at what they have done over the last few years, it is similar to what a lot of old technology has done; trying to reinvent itself and basically treaded water. There are better opportunities in technology, newer and growthier ones, and he would probably gravitate towards them.

This has tremendous promise with 1.7 billion active monthly users. If you look at the immense advertising power, it is quite dramatic. Advertising in the digital age is behind the times. We are seeing a lot of money pouring into digital advertising. However, looking at statistics, with about 25%-26% of time spent by us on mobile devices, only 11% of the advertising dollar is aimed at that market. That will catch up, and will be to the benefit of companies like this.

2017-03-16 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart GE-N General Electric

He does not admire this company’s management, even though the CEO gets almost universal praise for being a great CEO. The numbers don’t support it. The CEO started with the company in 2001, about 15 years ago, and looking at sales revenues per share, they are up only 5%-6% in total. Earnings and cash flow are flat. They’ve had one misstep after another.

(A Top Pick Feb 17/16. Up 38%.) Has owned this for many years and it has been a great company for him. It is in the sweet spot of where we are in the economic cycle. Low interest rates, buying new homes, renovating, etc. is what is motivating people to go to this company. One of the best managed companies he has ever covered.
