Market. He would like to see a bit more fear in the market. It is always good to have people worried about the market and what they are going to do. People are a little too complacent. The VIX Index is at multi-decades lows. Every day, every stock kind of goes up, especially the US tech names. If we have a bit of a setback where people can see that stocks can go down, that would throw a bit of water on the rally, and then we could rebuild into the 2nd quarter earnings report. Earnings have been great, but people are sort of extrapolating that we are going to be great for ever.

Energy. The problem with the TSX is that the energy sector is still a big component, even after a big decline this year. A 5% position in energy is appropriate right now. We don’t know which way energy is going to go, but right now it is just slowly drifting down with oversupply, and OPEC can’t stop that scenario. No one should be sitting with 20%-25% energy, regardless of any discount to US stocks.

Cut their dividend in 2009, but ever since then, they’ve raised it quite a bit. Now they have a couple of portfolio problems with their royalty stream. Doesn’t think the stock will do much until they accept the fact that some of their royalty payments are not being paid, and they have to somehow restructure to deal with the problem. Uncertainty is a killer of stock prices. The payout ratio is over 100%, so he would not say that the dividend is safe. Dividend yield of 8.1%.

Had a really tough quarter recently and the stock took a very big hit. It was really the wording of the company, reading between the lines, that gave a bit of cause for concern. They talked about weakening demand, political strife, change in the demand picture. He wouldn’t really care about that, but the company does have quite a lot of debt. A situation where you might want to back off for 2, 3 or 4 quarters to see how it plays out.

Their Air Canada (AC-T) contract doesn’t expire for another 3 years. They will continue to generate good cash flow from that contract until it ends. The balance sheet is OK, but not pristine and isn’t really that problematic. Even though Air Canada does not represent a big percentage of revenues, flights in and of themselves are a big percentage of their revenues. The true concern here is what do the 2 banks do, which have contracts that expire in 2024. They may look at what Air Canada did and follow their example. That still gives 7 years before it gets to that point. There has been an overreaction on the stock. A very well-managed company. He would call this a Trade rather than an Investment, something you don’t buy and park it for 5 years.

The payout ratio in the last quarter was less than 50%, using a cash flow valuation basis, the correct metric to use. They acquired WGL Holdings, which hasn’t closed yet, so they still have receipts outstanding. The dividend is nice. They’ve also said that the accretion to cash flow is very, very strong from the acquisition, so they are actually forecasting dividend increases going forward. There is a good opportunity here for income investors. It should be trading at a lower yield and higher price than what it is right now. Dividend yield of 7%.

There are a handful of engineering/construction companies in Canada. This had a big run up with all the big infrastructure stocks. A pretty good company. Very cheap valuation. The quarters kind of bounce around depending on whether they have a contract hitting the quarter or not. A solid name, but would prefer WSP Global (WSP-T), more of an international company that has made some great acquisitions. Even Stantec (STN-T) looks a little better on their history and long-term record of profitability.

This has been winning all sorts of contracts, and the stock has acted accordingly. They have all these contracts they are working on, and now have to execute on those orders and prove to investors they can make as much money as investors are expecting. Thinks this is viable, but there are higher risks right now because it has gone through the ramp up, and is now in the execution phase.

This has gone up 700% in the last 6-7 years. Last week they did their biggest acquisition and doubled their presence in Canada. They’ve done great acquisitions. It is slow and steady. Have executed very well. A solid, well-managed company. They have a very strong balance sheet. The company, with their last acquisition, has over a billion-dollar market cap, which takes it to the next level in Canadian investing. Dividend yield of 1%. (Analysts’ price target is $110.)

A manufacturer for other manufacturers. When companies get busy, they give their excess runs to this company. Not a bad little company. However, this is a later cycle stock. They have been buying back stock aggressively and the balance sheet is very, very strong. As the market and the economy continues to advance, it becomes a later stage company as well. He likes the Tech sector overall. Earnings leverage is very, very good.

In a registered account. Not his favourite company. They are serial issuers and the sector is rolling over. They really haven’t created that much long-term shareholder value. However, it is also one of the best companies to own if the energy sector recovers. Has great leverage to oil prices, and is a “go to” name for many, many large institutions. That makes it worth holding if you can’t utilize a tax loss. If you are outside of a registered account, there are better names out there.

A solid company. The last quarter was weaker than expected, so the stock had a hiccup downturn. They’ve done some very good acquisitions to ramp up their services to the home. Very buyable now and you can park it for 5-10 years and be quite happy. Dividend yield of 5%.

Investors are selling this because they are bored and nothing is happening. The company is sitting on $750 million of cash and has a great management team that owns 23% of the company. They know exactly what they are doing. The stock is only up 22% in the last year, and he thinks boredom is a very bad reason to sell. Someday you are going to wake up and this company will have done an acquisition, and their growth rate is going to accelerate. He gets a lot of questions on this company. (Analysts’ price target is $10.88.)

2017-06-06 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart HBC-T Hudson Bay Co.

Has done a really good job in taking a Canadian retailer and expanding it globally. Made some very good acquisitions and have done that quite well. They also have a pretty serious real estate portfolio which they could spin out to create some value. We are talking about the retail landscape and waiting for the company to create value from real estate, which may or may not happen. A cheap value stock, but their fundamental performance has not been that solid recently.

2017-06-06 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart LNF-T Leon's Furniture

Their merger with the Brick took a while to get the synergies out of it, but now it seems to be working pretty well. Valuation is cheap and it is a well-run company. However, there is now a psychological issue with it being a retailer. All the US retailers are getting decimated, and there is a bit of a valuation gapping down, and investors are just not paying what they used to pay for retailers, even if they are doing a good job. You are going to be fighting this for a period of time until something changes.
