Market. A cyclical movement index he uses is showing information that hasn’t been seen since the Great Depression and the tech bubble. This is cause for caution. He is looking at markets right now and there is really nothing that he would want to buy because everything is trading at such high multiples. Also, the earnings that are coming out are actually adjusted earnings, so he is not impressed. The “gap earnings” numbers are much lower than anticipated. Wall Street is allowing these numbers to flow through, but they are not generally accepted accounting principles. He is trading at about 20% Canada, 40% US and 40% International.

This company’s long-term game is infrastructure. They are looking to buy ports, toll roads, etc. that will give them a long-term return after tax of somewhere between 5% and 10%. What happens in the short term should be irrelevant for the investor as well as management. They are looking for investments that you can’t buy on the stock market, that are going to provide a consistent revenue stream, allowing them to take the cash and buying more assets.

BMW or Louis Vuitton as a 1st time purchase into Europe? He would recommend you be conservative first and get aggressive later. This one is cyclical. It would be better to go into a bank or an insurance company first, and after having made some money, look at other things. Has never owned any of the auto companies, simply because their capital expenditures usually wipe out any free cash flow.

This has its own little niche and a much smaller distribution than some of the larger names. The spirits business had struggles last year. There is nothing wrong with this one.

2017-07-27 SELL Must be logged in to use chart CVS-N CVS Health Corp

This has struggled on 2 fronts. They lost a big pharmacy benefit contract to Walgreens (WBA-Q), which cost them about 40 million prescriptions. Secondly, these are drugstores that are brick-and-mortar. A lot of retailers are starting to struggle because of Amazon (AMZN-Q). If he owned this, he would probably sell it.

(A Top Pick Aug 25/16. Up 16.18%.) Runs thousands of pawnshops, primarily in South America and Mexico, with a few in the US. This was a hedge against people who wanted to own the gold ETF.

This is in the penalty box. The problem is with having their AI and Watson on one side, and all the old hardware and systems on the other side. You have legacy assets that are not growing, and you have growth coming out of the other. Revenues for the last quarter were down 3% at constant currency. Growth profit margins are down year-over-year. Cloud is going to be a commoditized market, because you have Amazon (AMZN-Q), Salesforce (CRM-N) and Microsoft (MSFT-Q) in that area. It is really going to come down to Watson and how quickly they can write that Artificial Intelligence algorithm scalable to get market share and keep it. It could go sideways for a while and you’ll pick up yield, but hope that new services can grow faster than legacy assets is declining.

2017-07-27 BUY on WEAKNESS Must be logged in to use chart ITW-N Illinois Tool Works

A big industrial parts supplier. On their latest earnings, adjusted profits were up 16%, the highest quarterly income they’ve had in their history. Margins are 24%, an all-time record. The biggest rebound in the last quarter came from their welding and test and measurement. On the negative side, their auto business was flat. Trading close to an all-time high. This is a company with consistently growing free cash flow and dividends will follow. It is cyclical, so there will be volatility in down markets. He would wait for weakness to buy.

2017-07-27 TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart JM-SP Jardine Matheson

A big conglomerate that dates all the way back to the 1600s. They have the tentacles throughout China and other Asian countries, including Indonesia, Vietnam, etc. They have hotels, supermarkets, BMW and Mercedes dealerships, IKEA, 7-Eleven and even some Starbucks franchises. They have insurance. They’ve got Hong Kong land. If the Chinese market recovers, the US$ will start to fall and emerging market currencies will start to rise, and this company will start to make bigger profits. (Analysts’ price target is US$63.)

This is fairly valued right now. He doesn’t own this because two thirds of the businesses are doing well, but the consumer side is falling away. The pharmaceutical side has been doing well. The dividend growth is only in the 6%-7% range. The stock is trading at a big multiple that could come under pressure.

A Finnish elevator manufacturer. A cyclical business, but very well-run. He prefers Halma (?) out of Britain which makes sensors and smoke detectors. It generates considerable free cash flow that can grow 10% a year in revenues bottom line and dividends.

Dividends have been growing well since they first initiated them about 10 years ago. In their last quarter, they were up 10% in constant currencies. Commercial Cloud annualized revenues run rate is now $18 billion, and the growth has them on track to meet their goal of $20 billion. A quality company, with a good platform in all the right areas. They should be able to dominate the Cloud space.

2017-07-27 TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart NEE-N NextEra Energy

This is in wind, solar and nuclear power, mostly in Florida. The company has been able to grow their dividends at about a 10% clip. They continue to add megawatts to their power grid, basically in solar and wind. There is a lot of growth moving forward because they have had to retrofit from coal to gas, but also added more solar which is good for the environment and for their coffers. Dividend yield of 2.7%. (Analysts’ price target is US$150.50.)

(A Top Pick Aug 25/16. Up 4.92%.) YTD this is actually up over 20%, because it was one of the European stocks that bombed last year and was down about 20%-25%. It makes enzymes which are good for the environment. Their next big step forward is going to be biofuels. Strong free cash flow, and overhead is very low. Dividends are growing at about 15%.
