Market. Mid-July to mid-October tends to be weak for stock markets. Historically, right around July 19th, markets move lower through until the middle of October. Also, volatility starts to move higher. What happens in the summer is that you get slower volume. Every year for the past 20 years there is something unusual that happens. Volatility is not there yet, which implies that the big correction he expects has yet to come. Once the VIX starts to move higher, that is when you get the real correction.

Gold. Historically, when volatility starts to increase, then gold stocks and gold goes higher. Historically, gold and gold stocks bond right around the 3rd week in July, and then go higher right through until at least the end of September. This year, since July 19, gold and gold stocks have bottomed and have started to go higher. (See Top Picks.)

The longer-term trend for this is distinctly on the upside. The problem is that, like most of the FANG stocks, it is starting to struggle now. That is not unusual, because they have had such a huge run. Technically, it is in an upward trend, but is overbought and is starting to show some early signs of rolling over. From a trading point of view, you want to take some money off the table. Seasonally, this has done best from late October through until January.

He doesn’t know the seasonality, but technicals show it has had a fantastic move this year, but is now going down. It has some strong support at around $11. The technology sector has a tendency to peak at around the middle of July, and then tends to weaken through to about the middle of October.

Chart shows this is in a very distinct upward trend, and testing its high at around $2.70-$2.80. Because the trend is positive and because the stock, relative to the TSE composite, is positive for the last few weeks, the preferred strategy is to stick with the stock for now.

(A Top Pick May 8/17. Down 0.79%.) From the beginning of May right through until the middle of July, there has been a pretty good move. The middle of July is the end of the period of seasonal strength.

2017-08-04 SELL Must be logged in to use chart CPG-T Crescent Point Energy Corp

Energy has a period of seasonal strength from late January through to the end of May. It didn’t happen this year. Chart shows that it not only developed a downward trend, it has been underperforming the rest of the oil stocks in general. So far, we have yet to see any signs of the stock bottoming.

2017-08-04 SELL Must be logged in to use chart ELD-T Eldorado Gold

Historically, seasonality for gold and gold stocks is very positive right now. However, in this case there have been delays in their big Greek mine. The chart shows this is in a distinct downward trend and is clearly underperforming the market. There is no real reason to own this. (See Top Picks.)

2017-08-04 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart EMA-T Emera Inc

This is considered to be a type of utility company. Historically, utility stocks do very well in the summer. Currently, it is in a trading range of about $45 and $50. Seasonally, it normally does better at this time of year. If it moves above the resistance level of around $50, look for another small bump in the stock coming at approximately the end of September. At that time, it will be an opportunity to look for better opportunities, possibly in some of the more beta oriented stocks.

(A Top Pick May 8/17. Up 11.02%.) The period of seasonal strength for this is usually early May right through until the middle of July. We have reached the point where seasonality no longer applies. Now is a good time to take the money off the table.

2017-08-04 HOLD Must be logged in to use chart FTS-T Fortis Inc.

Utility oriented stocks tend to do very well in the summer. This had a good move this year, but is now having some difficulty. On a seasonal basis, it is okay to hold. Historically when you get into the fall, you want to choose something that has more beta. For now stick with it, but if there’s any kind of technical rolling over, then look for better opportunities elsewhere.

2017-08-04 PARTIAL SELL Must be logged in to use chart GOOGL-Q Alphabet Inc. (A)

You need 20 years on a stock before you can assess it on a seasonal basis. Technicals are very, very positive. However, like most of the FANG stocks, has reached a trading range. Historically, many technology oriented stocks have a history of peaking around the 3rd week of July. If you own, you probably want to take some money off the table with the idea of getting back in around the 3rd week of October.

2017-08-04 WATCH Must be logged in to use chart IFP-T Interfor Corp

This had a nice little bump in the last couple of days. This is probably the best example of a seasonal trade. The best time to own these stocks are normally from around late January to around May of each year. After it reaches its period of seasonal strength, it has a terrible history of dropping drastically or going flat. This year, the stock has come back to its long-term resistance level. It is reaching the period of time when the stock has a history of moving lower. If you own, watch it for the next couple of days. Any strength you see will be an opportunity to take some profits.

Love Don Vialoux's analysis of seasonal strength or weakness in regards to stock sectors. The patterns of seasonality that he points out are so interesting.

If you like palm reading you'll like Don. I think most of the seasonality stuff he makes up as he goes along. His analysis is on seasonality, even he admits has lots of exceptions. Can't figure how he lasted in the industry so long.
