He really likes the industrials.  He likes companies that benefit from capital spending.  This one fits in that camp.  It had a sharp pull back and he would like to see the technical picture in place before he puts new money there.

A global provider of products and services for building services and aerospace. In the building service space, they provide equipment for heating, ventilation, air conditioning and security. This would include Carrier and Chubb. They also have a 34% share in Otis Elevators. Also, do aerospace components, engines, lighting, etc. They own Pratt and Whitney, an airplane manufacturer. Just announced the acquisition of Rockwell Collins, another aerospace manufacturer, which they expect to close a year from now. Dividend yield of 2.5%. (Analysts’ price target is $125.)

Just acquired Rockwell Collins (COL-N) for $23 billion. He likes the company. A very well-run conglomerate. There are all sorts of divisions in it, and it is a leader in the all-important aviation industry. With this acquisition, they will be able to get enhanced pricing power. 1 + 1 is going to equal 3 in terms of their positioning and ability to extract profits in that whole aviation industry. The stock is down a little, so it may be an opportune time to add to your position. On any pullback, this should be bought.

It gets you into HVAC, defense, elevators and Aerospace.  They have attractive long term secular growth prospects.  (Analysts’ target: $125.50).

If infrastructure spending is going to be a major theme in North America then this will be a big beneficiary.  They have a decent yield - 2.3%.

2017-03-16 COMMENT Gordon Reid

Had owned this in the past and sold it about 3 years ago. It really wasn’t performing all that well, especially against its peer group. Thinks it is a better company today, and he gives management credit for that. There is a new CEO on board since he exited, and has done a fairly good job. They got rid of their Sikorsky helicopter business. The Goodrich acquisition has been fully integrated. They have a few headwinds. Their Carrier and Otis Elevator operations have some headwinds out of China. This is not a terrible choice.

This has been a low volatile stock for over 20 years, so it is a great long-term investment. Technically it is coming out of a cup and handle type formation, and will probably be a name that does very well under Trump. A lower US corporate tax rate, which some people feel might come down to 20%, would certainly help.

He likes the industrial and the defence spending space, and this company really benefits from both areas as their product includes aircraft, engines, elevators, escalators, climate control, etc. They’re going to benefit, not only from the recovery economy, but also that Trump is going to be putting money back into infrastructure and defence spending. Dividend yield of 2.4%. (Analysts’ price target is $116.50.)

2016-08-31 COMMENT Erin Gibbs

Although this is aerospace, they also have a lot of other businesses, including elevators and air conditioners. She is expecting them to grow in air conditioners, because of all the new home sales in the US. Good revenue growth. Trading at about 16X Forward Earnings, which is less then the S&P 500, but she is expecting higher growth in the market, and expects this to be a “market outperform”.

2016-08-16 COMMENT Christine Poole

A global diversified industrial company including the Otis elevator business, HVAC through Carrier, and Chubb. They also do Pratt & Whitney. Had difficulty last year in China on their elevators, where they had a lot more competition, and had to rejig their product line to become more competitive. There were also currency headwinds as well. The company is very well-managed and is working through these problems. She is starting to see a recovery in some of their end markets. Currently it is trading at a very attractive multiple in terms of price/earnings. Dividend yield of about 2.5%, which they tend to increase every year.

Didn’t perform as well at a company level as some of the other industrials. They had some management issues and the CEO was dumped. When that happens you see more change, and that change resulted in them selling Sikorsky. They still own Carrier, Otis Elevators and Pratt and Whitney. There are better performing industrials.

(A Top Pick June 9/15. Down 10.99%.) Has had some difficulty in the past year, but she still likes it. A high quality industrial. They make Otis elevators, Pratt & Whitney engines, Chubb as well as being involved in aerospace parts. She still likes this. A dividend yield of about 2.5%. Well placed in terms of 2 secular growth trends; emerging markets of China and India, as well as the increasing aerospace travel.

2016-03-10 COMMENT Christine Poole

It is global and when China slowed, it impacted them, especially Ottis Elevator.  They had to redesign some of their elevators.  FX was a headwind.  Honeywell wanted to make an offer but UTX walked away from it.  She still likes the name and it is very well managed.  Analyst day today at 2 pm.  No one ever thought UTX would be acquired.

2015-12-15 DON'T BUY Gordon Reid

He sold 6-8 months ago because it was overvalued.  It has suffered and he thinks it will continue to lag against other industrials.  The US$ and FX hits are the main cause.  They are about to abate. It will not be an issue.  They are a big player in aerospace, climate and Otis elevator.  The numbers are not coming through like they were.  This is hurting UTX-N.  He still thinks there is enough headwind to stand aside.

2015-12-15 PAST TOP PICK Brooke Thackray

(A Top Pick Oct 20/15. Down 5.49%.) A diversified industrial company. Earlier in the year and in 2014 they overpromised and underdelivered, and then came back and corrected that. October came out with some good earnings. Just recently they announced stronger forward guidance and a $1.5 billion restructuring program. They are doing all the right things, but the industrial sector has not been doing as well as it should. Usually its stronger this time of year. They have some exposure to China through their Otis elevator division. Has a really good strong seasonal period that comes up from January 23 to May 5.
